OpenAI's CEO of AGI deployment, Fidji Simo, announced that she is stepping down from her full-time position to become a part-time advisor. The transition follows an extended medical leave for a neuroimmune condition.

Simo detailed the circumstances in a post on X, stating that a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness she has lived with for seven years forced her onto medical leave three months ago. She wrote that the road to recovery proved much longer and more complex than I had anticipated, necessitating a full focus on her health.

In a separate LinkedIn post shared last year, Simo disclosed a diagnosis of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This rare disorder of the autonomic nervous system has no known cure and involves the shrinking of the heart, which prevents the maintenance of normal blood pressure. Common symptoms include fainting, lightheadedness and rapid increases in heart rate.

Simo described the experience of navigating a disabling disease while helping to build the future as jarring. She added that her focus is now on recovery, though her belief in technology's ability to solve human problems remains strong.

Leadership Shifts and Reorganization

Simo had originally announced a short medical leave in April, shortly after her title was changed from CEO of applications to CEO of AGI deployment. Around the same time, CMO Kate Rouch stepped down to focus on her health, with plans to return to a more narrowly scoped role, and COO Brad Lightcap stepped back to focus on special projects.

During Simo's absence, OpenAI President Greg Brockman assumed charge of product, including the development of a super-app. This was followed by a mid-May reorganization in which Brockman officially took over product strategy and scaling. According to a memo viewed by The Verge, Brockman now leads four pillars: core product and platform; consumer areas such as personal finance, commerce, and health; critical enterprise industries; and core infrastructure, growth, data science, and ads.

Brockman's stated goal for this reorganization is to prioritize AI agent goals by merging Codex and ChatGPT into a single agentic platform and a unified agentic experience for all.

Strategic Impact and Future Outlook

Simo’s exit occurs as OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering. The company has shifted research focus toward robotics and the creation of artificial general intelligence (AGI) to consolidate capabilities into a single super-app. On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled this super-app, featuring an AI agent designed to provide white-collar workers with coding tools.

While the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Bloomberg News reported via an internal memo that Simo's business and product responsibilities will be divided among Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon, CFO Sarah Friar, and President Greg Brockman.

CEO Sam Altman expressed his sadness over the news in an X post, stating he was very grateful for all Fidji has done for OpenAI and for her friendship.

Simo previously served as the CEO of Instacart and led the Facebook app at Meta. She joined OpenAI's board as one of three directors in March 2024 following Altman's return as CEO.
