Apple is planning a significant expansion and restructuring of its smartphone lineup, moving toward a biannual release cycle that could see the company launch at least five new iPhone models between the second half of 2026 and early 2027. According to a report from Nikkei Asia, the company intends to split its launch schedule to optimize supply chains and provide greater marketing flexibility for different device tiers.

The 2026 Launch Cycle

The second half of 2026 will reportedly focus on premium hardware. Nikkei Asia identifies three models expected for this window: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-anticipated iPhone Fold.

The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to introduce major camera enhancements. The Information reports a left-aligned selfie camera and a new image sensor designed to capture more light at night while preventing daytime photos from appearing washed out. Furthermore, Technobezz reports that these models will eliminate the Dynamic Island by moving Face ID sensors beneath the display and will feature a mechanical aperture for at least one camera to improve low-light photography.

Joining the Pro models will be Apple's first foldable device. The Information reports the iPhone Fold will feature a 5.3-inch external display and a 7.7-inch landscape interior display. While Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests the device remains on track for a September launch, reports from DigiTimes indicate production may have slipped by one to two months, with mass production moving from June to early August. To maintain a slim profile, leaker Digital Chat Station suggests the foldable may utilize a side-mounted fingerprint scanner rather than Face ID.

The 2027 Spring Transition

In a departure from its traditional autumn-centric strategy, Apple will push the standard iPhone 18 to a launch in the first half of 2027. This model will reportedly be accompanied by the iPhone 18e. According to Technobezz, the base iPhone 18 may remove haptic feedback from its camera control button as a cost-reduction measure.

The spring 2027 window is also expected to include the iPhone Air 2. The original iPhone Air reportedly suffered from weak demand due to its single 48-megapixel camera, shorter battery life, and single speaker. Consequently, Apple canceled trial production in November 2025. The second generation is rumored to address these flaws with a possible second rear camera and a price cut from the original $999 starting point.

Long-term Strategy and the iPhone 20

Looking further ahead to fall 2027, The Information reports Apple will unveil the iPhone XX (or iPhone 20) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone. This model is expected to feature a radical design with curved glass on all four sides and a narrow metal band around the midpoint of the edge where buttons are located. All sensors, including the selfie camera, will reportedly be hidden beneath the screen.

By 2027, Apple may maintain a seven-model annual structure including the "e" budget model, standard iPhone, iPhone Air, Pro, Pro Max, Ultra, and foldable variants. This strategy mirrors the diverse portfolio of Samsung and could potentially increase annual iPhone shipments by 10-15 percent, according to supply chain analysts.

Supply Chain and Manufacturing Hurdles

The aggressive roadmap faces significant technical challenges. Technobezz notes that LG Display and Samsung are working to increase under-panel sensor production yields from 40 to 70 percent. Foxconn and Pegatron must manage retooling costs for foldable hinge assembly lines, while under-screen camera technology is estimated to add $50-70 per unit in component costs.

To ensure continuity, Nikkei Asia reports that Apple will soon hold a "regular meeting" at Apple Park, expanded to include more materials suppliers and component makers.

The transition begins sooner than 2026; the iPhone 17e is expected to launch in spring 2026 as an upgrade to the iPhone 16e, adding MagSafe support which was absent in the previous budget model.
