Ubisoft unveils Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced for July 9 release

Ubisoft has officially revealed Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a full remake of the 2013 pirate adventure Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Scheduled for release on July 9, 2026, the title will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Led by Ubisoft Singapore — the studio behind Skull and Bones — the project features the return of many original developers. Ubisoft has rejected descriptions of the game as a remaster, stating it is a full remake rebuilt from the ground up with zero code from the 2013 original. The game utilizes the latest version of the Anvil engine, incorporating technology from Assassin’s Creed Shadows (2025), such as Micropolygon virtualized geometry and Atmos technologies.

Gameplay and Mechanical Overhauls

The remake shifts away from the RPG mechanics seen in recent franchise entries, focusing instead on a solo action-adventure experience. Key gameplay changes include:

  • Stealth and Movement: Edward Kenway now has a manual crouch option, replacing the original's contextual stealth. Parkour has been reworked for smoother flow, featuring refined landing animations and the addition of manual jumps, back ejects, and side ejects.
  • Combat: The system has been rebuilt around shorter combo chains and precise parries. While swords remain primary, the Hidden Blade is now restricted to stealth and contextual kills. Visual cues, such as an enemy's headpiece falling off, indicate when a defense is broken.
  • Mission Design: Tailing and eavesdropping missions have been revised so that detection no longer causes automatic failure; instead, the world adapts.

The naval experience is expanded with a new dynamic weather system where storms, lightning, and waterspouts affect ship handling. Additionally, players can recruit three new officers, each providing unique sea warfare capabilities.

Narrative and Content Changes

While the core story remains, Ubisoft has added new material to explore themes of greed and deepen character journeys. Darby McDevitt, the lead scriptwriter for the original, returned to write two new scenes and amend an existing one. New content includes expanded arcs for Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, a new scene with Kenway's wife Caroline, and an endgame chapter titled A World Without Gold featuring eight additional missions focused on Blackbeard.

Significant removals have also been made. The modern-day sections set in Abstergo Entertainment offices have been replaced with narrative-driven What if? scenarios and memories. the Freedom Cry DLC and original multiplayer modes have been removed to keep the focus on Edward's adventures in the Caribbean.

Technical Specifications and Editions

The visual overhaul includes physically based rendering (PBR) and the removal of loading screens when entering major cities. The PS5 version supports PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution 2.0 (PSSR 2), with specific enhancements for the PS5 Pro.

PC players will have access to frame generation, upscaling, and dedicated graphics presets for handheld devices. While a one-time online connection is required for installation, the experience is playable offline.
