Cyberpunk 2077 sells over 40 million copies worldwide
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 reached a milestone of over 40 million copies sold worldwide as of July 3, 2026. The figure includes standalone sales of the base game and copies sold as part of the Ultimate Edition bundle, which incorporates the Phantom Liberty expansion.
The studio shared the news via Bluesky and X. Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO, stated the achievement is evidence of the game's lasting strength
.
This total marks a rapid climb in sales. CD Projekt announced 35 million copies sold last November, and the game had reached 30 million in late 2024. In 2022, the title sat at 20 million copies, which was roughly half of the total then held by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The sales pace for Cyberpunk 2077 has now surpassed that of its predecessor. The Witcher 3 sold around 30 million copies within its first six years on the market. In that same six-year window, Cyberpunk 2077 has reached 40 million, outperforming the older RPG by 10 million copies.
The trajectory of the title has been a recovery from a difficult start. Launched in December 2020, the game arrived in decidedly rough shape
and was plagued by bugs. This led Sony to pull the game from the PlayStation Store and issue refunds to players.
CD Projekt spent over $100 million to fix the title after its release. This effort included the major 2.0 update, which overhauled cyberware systems, perks, and police AI. Other contributing factors to the game's rehabilitation included constant post-launch updates to address balance issues and bugs, alongside the Phantom Liberty expansion and the popular anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
The financial impact of the game has been substantial for the developer. Cyberpunk 2077 accounted for 72% of the total revenue for the company last quarter. Additionally, the title drove a 53% revenue increase for CD Projekt in November.
The franchise now serves as the financial engine for the studio's future projects. This includes Project Orion, the next game in the Cyberpunk series, and a Witcher 4 trilogy. Both are expected to be released in the distant future.
Beyond game development, the studio is expanding the universe into further media. Michał Nowakowski teased that a second season of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime is scheduled to arrive this fall, following a recently revealed teaser trailer.
