Galaxy Z Fold 8 Release Date: New Details Before Samsung Launch

Samsung is scheduled to hold its Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22, 2026, in London. This marks the company's first summer Unpacked event in the United Kingdom, a move viewed as a strategic entry into one of Apple's strongest premium markets. According to reports from Korea Economic TV, Android Police, SamMobile, Android Authority, and Tom’s Guide, the event will serve as the debut for a redesigned foldable lineup.

Following typical patterns, Samsung is expected to open pre-orders on the day of the announcement, with devices shipping approximately two weeks later. This puts the new handsets on sale around August 7, 2026. This timing provides Samsung a two-month window before the expected September launch of Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Fold (also referred to as the iPhone Ultra), which is projected to use a wider 4:3 form factor.

A Diversified Foldable Lineup

For the first time, Samsung will introduce two distinct book-style foldable designs. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra replaces the Z Fold 7, maintaining the traditional tall book-style form factor while positioning itself as the most premium option. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (also known as the Wide Fold) introduces an entirely new landscape-oriented design. This "Wide" model features a 4:3 aspect ratio on its inner screen, making it resemble a small tablet and allowing wide-screen videos to fit more naturally without the large black bars seen on previous generations.

A third device, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, will continue as the clamshell foldable aimed at casual buyers. Alongside these phones, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Watch 9 series and the Galaxy Glasses — a display-less, Gemini-powered audio device created in partnership with Gentle Monster.

Technical Specifications and Hardware

The Z Fold 8 Ultra features significant hardware leaps, specifically in imaging and power. It is expected to house a 200MP primary sensor with OIS, a 50MP ultrawide lens — a major jump from the Z Fold 7's 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. Powering the device is a 5,000mAh battery supporting 45W charging, ending a five-generation streak of 4,400mAh batteries.

The Z Fold 8 Wide is lighter at 201g, compared to the Ultra's approximately 215g. It trades some power for its unique form factor, utilizing a smaller 4,800mAh battery and a dual-camera system consisting of a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP ultrawide lens, omitting the telephoto lens entirely. Its displays include a 5.4-inch cover panel and a 7.6-inch inner screen.

Regarding durability and aesthetics, ZDNet Korea reports the Wide Fold uses 60μm ultra-thin glass on its inner display, which is 30% thicker than the 45μm glass used on the Ultra. This difference may result in better resistance to impacts and could influence the visibility of the screen crease. While Samsung demoed a crease-free panel at CES 2026, most reports suggest the Fold 8 generation will see a modest improvement of roughly 20% in crease visibility rather than a total removal.

Both Fold models are expected to run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while the Z Flip 8 will be powered by the Exynos 2600, depending on the region. All three will ship with Android 17 and One UI 9.0.

Color and Storage Options

According to Digital Citizen and Ice Universe, the available configurations are as follows:

Model Available Colors Storage Options
Z Fold 8 Ultra Cream, Graphite, Green Shadow, Violet Shadow 256GB, 512GB, 1TB
Z Fold 8 (Wide) Cream, Graphite, Lavender, Pistachio (plus online-exclusive greens) 256GB, 512GB, 1TB
Z Flip 8 Cream, Graphite, Mint, Pink 256GB, 512GB

Pricing and Market Outlook

Final U.S. Pricing remains unconfirmed, but leaks suggest a tiered structure for the Ultra model. The 256GB entry price is expected to hold at $1,999.99, while the 512GB and 1TB models may see increases of $80 to $90 over previous tags. Some reports, including those from NewsPim, warn that global DRAM shortages could push the 1TB configuration above $2,700.

The Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to be the more affordable of the two book-style phones due to its reduced camera hardware, with some estimates placing it around $1,800. Tipster Lanzuk on Naver suggests the popular "double storage" pre-order deal may survive, though it could be watered down or restricted to specific regions, such as Europe, similar to the Galaxy S26 launch.
