Kensington has introduced the SD5010T5 EQ Thunderbolt 5 Docking Station, a high-performance hub designed to eliminate data bottlenecks for professionals engaged in AI applications and 8K editing. The device aims to simplify complex desktop setups by consolidating high-speed data transfer, multi-display capabilities, and laptop charging into a single-cable solution.

The dock leverages Thunderbolt 5 technology to provide bi-directional bandwidth of up to 80Gbps. For video-intensive workflows, a feature called Bandwidth Boost can increase this speed to 120Gbps. Ben Hacker, General Manager of the Client Connectivity Division at Intel, stated that Thunderbolt 5 provides the necessary bandwidth for data-intensive applications and high-resolution content creation, noting that docking solutions are essential to unlocking that capability.

Display and Hardware Specifications

The SD5010T5 EQ offers varied display configurations depending on the host operating system. Windows users can drive three 4K displays at 144Hz or two 8K displays at 60Hz using two HDMI ports and one Thunderbolt 5 port.

For Apple users, support varies by chipset. MacBooks with M-Series Pro and Max chips, as well as M4/M5 base chips, can support two 4K displays at 60Hz via two HDMI ports, or one 4K display at 60Hz paired with one display up to 6K via the Thunderbolt 5 port. The dock can handle up to three external displays when paired with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips.

The 13-in-1 connectivity suite includes:

  • Two Thunderbolt 5 ports (host and downstream)
  • Two HDMI ports
  • One USB-A 10Gbps port
  • Two USB-A 5Gbps ports
  • Two USB-C 10Gbps ports
  • 2.5Gbps Ethernet port
  • Two SD/Micro SD 4.0 slots
  • Audio combo jack

Power delivery is handled via USB-C PD 3.1, providing up to 140W of dynamic power to compatible laptops. The device also includes a feature called KonstantCharge, which allows connected peripherals to continue charging even if the laptop is undocked.

Compatibility and Design

The dock is compatible with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and USB-C devices. Supported operating systems include macOS 14.5 or later and Windows 11. For Windows users, Kensington provides free DockWorks software to customize security and performance settings.

Sustainability was a factor in the hardware design; the outer casing consists of 100% post-consumer recycled aluminum, and the packaging is FSC-certified. For workspace management, Kensington offers an optional K34050WW mounting bracket for zero-footprint installation and supports security cable locks via K65020WW or K65021WW models.

Giovanni Sena, Kensington SVP and general manager, stated:

"Thunderbolt™ 5 sets a new standard for performance, and the SD5010T5 is designed to make that power practical and accessible for everyday professionals,"

Market Availability and Technical Observations

The SD5010T5 EQ is available now in North America through the Kensington Store and partner sites for $299.99, carrying a three-year limited warranty.
