God of War TV show recasting Kratos after Ryan Hurst stunt injury
Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios are recasting the role of Kratos in the upcoming God of War live-action series. The decision follows a severe on-set injury sustained by lead actor Ryan Hurst, according to reports from TMZ and Variety.
Hurst tore his biceps while performing a stunt in June. The injury required surgery to repair the muscle. While producers initially hoped the actor could return to the Vancouver set by mid-August, sources told TMZ that the recovery timeline extends beyond that window. Typical recovery for such an injury takes 4-6 months, which would delay a potential return until well into 2027.
Because the recovery period is too long to simply pause production, Amazon is now seeking a replacement for Hurst. This shift means previously filmed scenes will have to be reshot.
Production is scheduled to restart in mid-October, according to Deadline.
The project has faced other obstacles prior to the stunt accident. In 2024, original showrunner Rafe Judkins left the project during a period of creative changes. Amazon MGM subsequently appointed Ronald D. Moore, known for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica, to lead the series.
Hurst, who previously voiced the character of Thor in the video game God of War: Ragnarok, was officially announced as the lead for the series in January 2026. Amazon had shared a first look at Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus in February. The project was first announced in 2022.
The ensemble cast for the Prime Video series includes several other notable actors:
- Mandy Patinkin as Odin
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor
- Ed Skrein as Baldur
- Max Parker as Heimdall
- Teresa Palmer as Sif
- Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri
- Alastair Duncan as Mimir, reprising his role from the original games
- Sonya Walger as Freya
- Louis Cunningham, Ben Chapple, Evelyn Miller, and Island Austin as the children of Thor and Sif
Amazon Studios has declined to comment on the injury or the revised production schedule. No confirmed release date has been set for the series.
