Gutted' Brendon McCullum sacked as England cricket test match coach
Brendon McCullum has been dismissed as England's men’s Test coach, ending the 'Bazball' era. He will remain in charge of the white-ball teams.
The England and Wales Cricket Board has dismissed Brendon McCullum as head coach of the men’s Test team. The announcement, made on Sunday, 12 July 2026, marks the formal end of the high-aggression tactical era known as "Bazball." While McCullum is relieved of his red-ball duties with immediate effect, he will continue his role as head coach of England’s white-ball teams.
The decision followed a period of intense scrutiny regarding the Test side's performance. Recent results include a 4-1 series loss in Australia and a 2-1 home series defeat against New Zealand. These setbacks, coupled with the recent international retirement of captain Ben Stokes, prompted the board to seek a total reset. Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, described the move as a necessary step for the team’s long-term trajectory. Unfortunately, the results have not gone the way that we wanted them to go,
Gould stated. It’s always been a results-based business.
McCullum, who oversaw 49 Tests, finishes his tenure with 27 wins, 20 defeats, and two draws. Despite the abrupt end to his time with the Test squad, he expressed gratitude for his tenure.
"I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. There’ve been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that’s all part of taking on a challenge like this. It’s been a privilege and an honour, and I’m grateful. Grateful to the players, the staff and the fans who supported us on the journey."
Reflecting on the dismissal, McCullum maintained a focus on his remaining responsibilities, noting that he was gutted
by the decision but respected the governing body's position. His exit comes shortly after he led the white-ball side to a 4-0 series victory over India, a performance that propelled the team to the top of the world T20 rankings.
The recruitment process for a new Test coach is now underway, led by Rob Key, the managing director of the England men’s side. The ECB has indicated it is willing to consider candidates regardless of nationality or existing employment, including those with commitments in the Indian Premier League. Among the names linked to the vacancy are former coach Andy Flower, whose previous tenure saw England reach the top of the Test rankings, as well as Andrew Flintoff.
Gould confirmed that there are no immediate plans to change the leadership structure regarding Key, who will manage the search for a replacement. The board’s stated urgency is driven by the calendar, with 10 Test matches remaining before the 2027 Ashes series. Whilst we have significant amount of time to get better again with a new coach coming in, we want to use as much time as we can have available,
Gould said.
England’s red-ball squad now faces a period of transition, requiring both a new coach and a new captain to succeed Stokes.
