Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe has claimed his second hat-trick in eight days, leading a devastating bowling spell that left the Essex batting lineup in disarray during day two of the Rothesay County Championship match at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground in Chelmsford.

The 24-year-old paceman, who is scheduled to join Surrey at the end of the season, reduced Essex from 171-3 to 177 all out in the span of 26 balls. Crocombe's five wickets came within 14 deliveries without conceding a run, finishing the innings with figures of 5-39. This performance marks his third five-wicket haul of the current campaign.

Essex had previously progressed comfortably after tea, reaching three figures for the loss of two wickets in 32 overs. Charlie Allison contributed 56, including a reverse sweep for four, and shared a 58-run stand with Dean Elgar. However, the momentum shifted when James Coles bowled Elgar with his third ball. Allison eventually fell lbw to Crocombe, triggering a collapse in which Essex lost seven wickets for six runs.

The carnage peaked during Crocombe's ninth over, where he trapped Simon Harmer and Zaman Akhter lbw with his first two deliveries before bowling Shane Snater with the third to complete the hat-trick. Crocombe had previously recorded his first professional hat-trick against Somerset's tail in Sussex's last County Championship fixture.

The collapse provided Sussex with a first-innings lead of 98, according to BBC Sport, while Sky Sports reported a lead of 102. Sussex had reached 275 in the morning, aided by Ari Karvelas, who scored 38 from 44 balls. Karvelas, who had been released by the club and worked as a Sussex academy coach before being re-signed on a short-term contract, was the last man out in the first innings.

During the first innings, Jamie Porter claimed his 600th first-class wicket with figures of 4-44. In the second innings, Sussex reached 90-4, extending their overall lead to 188. Earlier, Sam Cook had been withdrawn from the match midway through following a call-up from England.

Wickets tumble at the Oval

In other action, a high-scoring day at the Oval saw 23 wickets fall in the match between Surrey and Yorkshire. Yorkshire's bowling attack, led by Jack White (3-14) and Ben Coad (3-22), dismissed Surrey for 83 in their first innings. Only four Surrey players reached double figures, with Ollie Pope scoring 21.

Yorkshire suffered a similar fate shortly after, collapsing from 36-2 to 82 all out. Matt Fisher, who was omitted from the England squad for the upcoming third Test, took a career-best 6-25. According to The Guardian, this was the first time since 1950 that a single day of first-class cricket at the Oval featured elements of all four innings.

Surrey reached 27-0 in their second innings at the close of play and require 158 runs to secure only their second County Championship win of the season.

International stars and regional clashes

Northamptonshire and Durham faced off in a Division Two promotion battle. Former India bowler Yuzvendra Chahal produced a delivery that pitched outside off stump and spun back to dismiss former England captain Ben Stokes for 14. Chahal finished with 4-36, though Durham managed 205. Stokes responded with the ball, taking 3-40 to reduce Northamptonshire to 225-7 by the end of day two.
