Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck as the club seeks to integrate more experience into its squad. The 35-year-old is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism within the club that a deal will be concluded.

The pursuit of Welbeck reflects a broader shift in recruitment strategy. In April, influential owner Behdad Eghbali stated that the club's model of signing young players needs a tweak. Welbeck, who has previously played for Arsenal, Manchester United, Watford, and Sunderland in the Premier League, is viewed as a good fit for this adjusted approach.

Welbeck comes off a productive campaign with Brighton, where he scored 13 league goals in 37 games last season, a career-high. Since joining from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches. Despite the current talks, the striker recently signed a 12-month contract extension in March, which keeps him under contract until the end of the 2026-27 season.

The arrival of the veteran striker would create a crowded attacking line, especially as Chelsea is not involved in European competition. Joao Pedro is currently regarded as the first-choice option, and Welbeck may be content to provide cover for him. However, the move could signal the end for several other forwards.

The current attacking options at the club include:

• Nicolas Jackson: Recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich. While expected to stay, he is open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa.
• Liam Delap: Joined from Ipswich for £30m a year ago and hoped to establish himself under manager Xabi Alonso, but he is increasingly expected to depart.
• Marc Guiu: Valued by Chelsea at about £25m and understood to be available for a loan or permanent transfer.
• Emmanuel Emegha: A Dutch striker who recently joined from Strasbourg, a club within the same ownership group, though his future remains uncertain.

New manager Xabi Alonso is prioritizing strong personalities and experience to fix the shortcomings that led to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Welbeck's potential signing is part of a larger effort to add Premier League-ready talent.

Chelsea have already secured the services of full-back Marco Palestra and attacker Morgan Rogers. Rogers, 23, cost a club-record £117m; while his age aligns with the previous youth-centric policy, he brings significant Premier League experience. The club is also closing in on a £52m move for 26-year-old Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.

This trend toward experienced players was also evident in an attempt to sign 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, though the Black Cats refused to sell the Switzerland captain.

As the summer window continues, Colwill has stated the Blues are ready to compete with Arsenal and that the team will be different. Alonso expects further movement on transfers as the club looks to finalize its squad for the upcoming season.
