Bayern Munich top Borussia Dortmund to win German Supercup
Bayern Munich secured their 12th Franz Beckenbauer Supercup title defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the 140th competitive edition of Der Klassiker. The victory at Signal Iduna Park serves as a season opener for the reigning Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal champions as they begin their 2026/27 campaign.
A dominant first half provided the foundation for the win. Nathaniel Brown opened the scoring in the 28th minute, firing a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom-right corner after receiving a lay-off from Michael Olise. Bayern continued to pressure the Dortmund defense, with Gregor Kobel required to save a curling effort from Luis Diaz.
Dortmund attempted to respond before the break, but a goal by Ramy Bensebaini from a deep set-piece was disallowed for offside. Bayern capitalized on this momentum in stoppage time of the first half when Michael Olise intercepted a loose pass from Jobe Bellingham and prodded the ball past Kobel to make it 2-0.
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Dortmund pushed aggressively, forcing Manuel Neuer to save a drilled strike from Konstantinos Karetsas. In an attempt to find an equalizer, Niko Kovač introduced three substitutes an hour into the match. The gamble paid off in the 75th minute when substitute Fabio Silva buried a pullback from Daniel Svensson to bring the score to 2-1.
The closing stages were marked by volatility. Neuer nearly conceded an open goal following a lapse in concentration that almost benefited Bellingham. Shortly after, Ramy Bensebaini received a straight red card for an overzealous challenge on Ismael Saibari. In stoppage time, Maximilian Beier missed a golden chance to equalize from close range, skying his shot after being pressured by defender Jonathan Tah.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany described the performance as a statement of energy, fighting for every ball, every situation
. Addressing critics who suggest the team might struggle after winning everything last year, Kompany stated:
"Some people maybe think we'll have a drop because we won everything last year. But that won't be the case, we won't rest and will try to win everything"

The match featured several key personnel rotations. Alphonso Davies, returning from a hamstring injury that limited his World Cup participation, entered the game in the 68th minute. The victory marks Davies' 17th trophy with the club and his fourth Supercup. While Brown joined from Eintracht Frankfurt as a left back, Kompany deployed him in an attacking midfield role for this match, supported by Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović.
Bayern's squad continues to integrate new talent. Kompany noted that Michael Olise and Harry Kane played 90 minutes despite only training three times with the team. He also highlighted the potential of Nene Brown and Saibari. Jonathan Tah praised the adaptation of Nene Brown, stating he had a great performance today
.
For Borussia Dortmund, the loss continues a difficult trend at home in this competition; they have now lost more than half of the Supercups they have hosted, all to Bayern (W3, L4). Midfielder Joey Veerman, who joined the club four days prior to the match, acknowledged the difficulty of the first half but expressed hope for the league season.
Bayern Munich will begin their Bundesliga title defense this Friday against VfB Stuttgart. They follow that with a DFB-Pokal match on Wednesday against VfL Osnabrück. Borussia Dortmund will open their league campaign against Hamburger SV.
