Chelsea sign France defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace

Chelsea have completed the signing of France international defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The transfer is reported to be worth 52 million pounds ($70 million).

The 26-year-old center back has agreed to a contract that runs until 2032. He joins the club following a stint at Palace where he won the FA Cup, the UEFA Conference League, and the Community Shield. Lacroix arrives at Stamford Bridge immediately after returning from the World Cup with the French national team.

Lacroix described the move as the best step forward for his career, stating that he views Chelsea as the best club in the world. He noted that conversations with current players including Benoit Badiashile, Trev Chalobah, and Malo, as well as a tactical discussion with the manager, influenced his decision.

"When I spoke with the manager, I saw that we have the same direction and desire for this club," Lacroix said. "We want to win. When you see the quality of the players here, everything we have around the club, it’s something that we can achieve. The ambition is to lift trophies, and I can’t wait to contribute."

The arrival of the defender is part of a broader recruitment drive under new manager Xabi Alonso. Lacroix is the latest major signing of the current window, following the arrivals of Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers. Reports indicate that Alonso is also targeting Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.

While Chelsea may look to further raid the Crystal Palace squad — with reports suggesting interest in Colombian full-back Daniel Munoz — Palace are already moving to fill the gap left by Lacroix. The club is currently reassessing its defensive options after talks with Augsburg for center-back Chrislain Matsima stalled.

Palace have held talks in recent weeks with representatives of 21-year-old defender Nathan Zeze. Zeze, who currently plays for Neom SC, is described as a longstanding target who first appeared on the club's radar in 2024 while at Nantes. He is said to be keen on returning to Europe.

Further defensive reinforcements are expected at Selhurst Park. Palace have reportedly agreed personal terms with 19-year-old defender Raphael Le Guen. Additionally, the club is considering a move for Takehiro Tomiyasu, a free agent and former Arsenal defender who recently left Ajax. Tomiyasu was reportedly on the bench as a trialist during a Como Cup match where Palace lost to Lens.

Lacroix's career path saw him begin at Sochaux before moving to Wolfsburg, and eventually joining Crystal Palace in 2024.
