Egypt advanced to the World Cup round of 16 for the first time in their history after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout on Friday, July 3. The victory at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, followed a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes of play.

The Pharaohs took an early lead in the 13th minute when 22-year-old Emam Ashour powered home a header from a Karim Hafez cross. This marked Ashour's second goal of the tournament. Egypt controlled much of the first half, maintaining a 64% possession rate in the first 20 minutes. However, Australia remained dangerous, nearly scoring early when Cristian Volpato hit the top of the crossbar from 20 yards.

The second half shifted as Australia pressed for an equalizer. After a period of play where Omar Marmoush missed a close-range opportunity to double Egypt's lead, the Socceroos found success on a set piece. A free kick from Aiden O'Neill was deflected into the net by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany. This was Hany's second own goal of the competition, following a similar occurrence in a group-stage draw against Belgium.

The match remained tense through the final stages of regulation. Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who entered the tournament with only two caps, made a crucial reaction save on a charging header from Rami Rabia in stoppage time to force extra time.

Egypt dominated possession during the additional 30 minutes and created several chances. Captain Mohamed Salah, who played the full 120 minutes while nursing a hamstring injury suffered against Iran, missed a significant opportunity when he flicked a shot over the bar. Despite the pressure, neither side could find a winner before the whistle.

In a tactical gamble, Australia manager Tony Popovic substituted Patrick Beach for veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan just before the shootout. The move proved ineffective as Ryan failed to record a save. Egypt converted all four of their attempts through Mahmoud Saber, Rami Rabia, Mohamed Salah, and Hossam Abdelmaguid.

Australia struggled from the spot, with both starting center backs missing. Harry Souttar's first attempt sailed high over the crossbar, and Lucas Herrington saw his effort crash off the crossbar. The shootout concluded when Abdelmaguid scored the final penalty to secure the 4-2 win.

Salah, named player of the game, utilized a "Panenka" chipped effort for his penalty.

The result is historic for Egypt, marking their first-ever knockout stage win and their second World Cup victory overall, following a 3-1 group-stage win over New Zealand.

Egypt will now face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde.
