FIFA to extend World Cup final halftime to 30 minutes for star-studded show
FIFA will break traditional match protocol for the World Cup 2026 final on Sunday, July 19, by extending the halftime break to 30 minutes. The decision allows for a massive entertainment spectacle at the New York New Jersey Stadium, moving away from the standard rules governed by the International Football Association Board (Ifab), which state that halftime breaks should not exceed 15 minutes
.
The extended break is designed to accommodate a Super Bowl-style production and includes time for first-half match analysis. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has modernized the tournament, drawing influence from the co-host United States and the operational style of major American sporting events. While some sources told the Independent that the show itself would last around 20 minutes, other reports confirm the total break will be 30 minutes. One planned element of the production is an 11-minute show, a figure Infantino noted was inspired by the 11 players each team puts on the pitch.
The halftime event will be curated by Chris Martin and features a global lineup of performers. Co-headliners include Madonna, Shakira, and the K-pop group BTS. Other artists scheduled to perform include Justin Bieber, Burna Boy, and Gustavo Dudamel, along with the PS22 Chorus featuring Coldplay.
The inclusion of Burna Boy highlights the growing influence of Afrobeats in global pop culture. The Nigerian superstar, who has surpassed 50 million monthly Spotify listeners by 2026, is sharing the stage with the other international headliners in what is described as the first-ever World Cup final halftime show.
This event follows a precedent set in 2025 at the same venue during the FIFA Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. That halftime show lasted 24 minutes and featured Tems, Doja Cat, J Balvin, Emmanuel Kelly, and Coldplay.
Beyond the halftime break, the stadium will host the tournament's closing ceremony starting at 1:30 p.m. ET (18:30 BST). This segment will feature Tom Cruise, Robbie Williams, Laura Pausini, Nicole Scherzinger, and IShowSpeed. The 21-year-old IShowSpeed has transitioned from a gaming streamer to FIFA’s most influential digital creator; he previously released a song called Champions
on the official FIFA World Cup 2026 album and has reached 50 million YouTube subscribers.
The sporting stakes are equally high as the tournament enters its final stage. Spain has already secured a spot in the final after a 2-0 victory over France on July 14. England and Argentina are scheduled to play the second semi-final on July 15 in Atlanta to determine who will face Spain.
The 2026 tournament has seen several major changes, including an expanded format of 48 teams, the introduction of a round of 32 in the knockout stage, and new hydration breaks. The scale of the event is reflected in its viewership; the tournament has already accumulated 11.53 billion total viewers over 96 matches. The final is projected to draw over 1.5 billion global viewers, surpassing the 1.42 billion reached by the 2022 final.
The final kicks off at 3 p.m. ET (8 p.m. BST) on July 19. Jennifer Hudson will perform the United States' national anthem before the match. In the UK, the event will be broadcast on the BBC and ITV, with ITV confirming it will air the full halftime show and match analysis.
