South Africa World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams dies at 25
South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, only weeks after contributing to Bafana Bafana's historic run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The death was confirmed on Saturday, July 11, 2026, by Gayton McKenzie, South Africa's minister of sport, arts and culture.
Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk told AFP that authorities opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found Saturday morning in a house in Schotsche Kloof, a central Cape Town suburb. A cause of death has not been officially reported. Minister McKenzie urged the public and media to refrain from speculation and to exercise compassion.
Adams had recently helped South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. During the group stage, Adams appeared in all three matches. He started the opener against Mexico, which ended in a 2-0 defeat, and the match against the Czech Republic, which ended in a 1-1 draw. He was substituted at halftime in both of those starts. He later came off the bench in a 1-0 victory over South Korea, a result that secured the team's first-ever place in the knockout rounds. South Africa was eliminated from the tournament on June 28 after a 1-0 loss to co-host Canada in the Round of 32; Adams did not appear in that final match.
The midfielder played through personal tragedy during the tournament. His grandmother, Marianna, died at age 72 on June 17. The South African Football Association stated on June 27 that Adams started the game against Czechia the following day, June 18, while carrying the burden of that loss. McKenzie noted that Adams played the match only hours after learning of his grandmother's death.
At the club level, Adams played for the Pretoria-based Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC. He rose through the youth system at Stellenbosch, where he became the first academy product to sign a professional contract. He made 139 appearances for Stellenbosch and helped the club win the 2023 Carling Knockout. Some records indicate he made 109 appearances and scored seven goals over six seasons with the club.
In January 2025, Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns. He played 40 games for the team and helped them win the 2025-26 CAF Champions League. On the international stage, he debuted against Mozambique in 2022. He earned 13 caps for Bafana Bafana and scored two goals, both appearing in qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. He also helped South Africa achieve its best finish in 24 years at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team placed third.
The sports community and government officials reacted with grief to the news. FIFA President Gianni Infantino posted on Instagram that Adams would be sorely missed
and that his thoughts were with the player's family and teammates.
