Man United activate £35m release clause for Aston Villa star in shock move
Manchester United are set to finalise the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after activating a £35 million release clause. The move comes as a surprise to the market but provides an experienced solution for a midfield currently depleted by departures and injuries.
The 29-year-old Belgium international reportedly favours a move to Old Trafford and has a verbal agreement to join, according to Fabrizio Romano. While Aston Villa have no desire to sell the midfielder and offered him new terms months ago, the release clause mechanism leaves them with little choice. Tielemans is currently under contract until June 2028.
The pivot to Tielemans follows United's decision to abandon a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. A deal for the Brazil international had been struck for €40.5 million fixed plus €4.5 million in potential add-ons, and personal terms had been agreed. However, United pulled the plug on the move after concerns regarding the player's fitness emerged following a prolonged medical. Ederson had undergone initial medical tests before a late call-up to his country's World Cup squad.
United's urgency in the midfield follows the departure of Casemiro and a knee ligament injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte during Uruguay's World Cup group-stage loss to Spain. Michael Carrick's efforts to rebuild the area have already seen the acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million plus £2 million in bonuses. The club also pursued England international Elliot Anderson, who joined Manchester City for £116 million, and Mateus Fernandes, who moved to Tottenham Hotspur after West Ham United set a valuation of £85 million.
Tielemans arrives with significant Premier League experience, having spent eight seasons in the English top flight. He first joined Leicester City on an initial loan from AS Monaco midway through the 2018/19 season and notably scored the winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea. After Leicester's relegation in 2023, he joined Aston Villa on a free transfer.
During the 2025-26 campaign, Tielemans was a key figure in the Villa side that qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League, including scoring the opening goal in the final victory over Freiburg. He recorded two goals and seven assists across 35 appearances in all competitions last season.
The departure is a blow to Villa manager Unai Emery, who intended to build his midfield around a trio consisting of Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara, and Amadou Onana. The latter is currently sidelined for a significant period after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Belgium's World Cup match against the United States. To mitigate midfield losses, Villa recently hijacked a move by Newcastle United to sign Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for £60 million.
On the international stage, Tielemans captained Belgium during their World Cup run, scoring twice in a 3-2 comeback win against Senegal in the round of 32. However, he missed Belgium's quarter-final defeat to Spain on Friday due to an injury sustained during the warm-up.
United view Tielemans as a progressive passer capable of breaking lines and reducing the creative burden on Bruno Fernandes. He is also expected to provide defensive stability and ground coverage to fill the void left by Casemiro.
While most reports indicate the deal is progressing, some observers have noted a lack of public confirmation regarding the existence of the £35 million clause in Tielemans' current Villa contract, pointing out that such a figure was historically associated with his time at Leicester City. Contact remains ongoing between all parties to finalise the transfer.
