The Texas Longhorns have secured a major victory on the recruiting trail as Marcus Spears Jr., the top-ranked prospect in the class of 2027, announced on Thursday that he is committing to the program and reclassifying into the class of 2026.
The 17-year-old forward from Dynamic Prep in Plano, Texas, will forgo his senior year of high school to join Sean Miller’s roster for the upcoming 2026-27 season. In an Instagram post featuring the HookEm
hashtag, Spears Jr. Described the move as The next chapter
.
The decision to move up a grade began approximately one month ago, according to ESPN, when his mother, former WNBA player Aiysha Spears, suggested the move to her husband. Marcus Spears Sr., a former NFL defensive end and current ESPN analyst, said the family discussed the idea before sitting down with their son.
"He was comfortable with the idea. He loved the challenge of it, and we explained the responsibilities that come with being a college freshman athlete,"

Spears Jr. Chose Texas over more than 20 Division 1 programs, including high-profile suitors such as Kentucky, LSU, Arizona, Arkansas, Alabama, and North Carolina. Family ties played a role in the decision, as his older sister, Cari Spears, is already at the university playing volleyball. Cari, a former top 5-ranked prospect in the class of 2025, started all 30 matches this season and earned AVCA Third Team All-American honors.
The commit brings elite credentials to Austin. A left-handed power forward standing 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, Spears Jr. Was the only player to rank in the top 10 for both scoring and rebounding on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring, where he averaged 20.9 points and 8.7 rebounds. He also helped USA Basketball secure a gold medal at the 2025 FIBA U16 Men's AmeriCup, averaging 14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Because he turned 17 in April, Spears Jr. Will not be eligible for the 2027 NBA Draft. He must spend two seasons in college before becoming draft-eligible in 2028. This trend of early entry is mirrored by other top prospects, such as Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje of Duke and Nikola Kusturica of UCLA.
For Marcus Spears Sr., the appeal of Texas was the development plan offered by Sean Miller. The elder Spears cited Miller's history of coaching players like Aaron Gordon and Deandre Ayton, as well as the improvement of Dylan Swain at Xavier and Texas, as evidence of a culture of toughness and winning.
The arrival of Spears Jr. Bolsters an already aggressive offseason for the Longhorns. Texas has landed a strong transfer class including former Colorado guard Isaiah Johnson and former TCU forward David Punch, along with transfers Amari Evans and Elyjah Freeman. The 2026 recruiting class also includes five-star forward Austin Goosby—a Dynamic Prep teammate of Spears Jr.—as well as Bo Ogden, Joe Sterling, Coleman Elkins, and Lithuanian prospect Mantas Laurenčikas.
The addition of the five-star recruit has shifted external perceptions of the team. While The Athletic previously ranked Texas No. 7 in its offseason top 25, analyst CJ Moore indicated that the roster is now deep enough to be considered a top-five team and a true national title front-runner.

Texas is scheduled to open its season on Nov. 26 at the Rady Children’s Invitational, which will serve as the first look at the new roster and Spears' integration into the lineup alongside returning center Matas Vokietaitis.
