Muhamad Aznil Bidin secured his third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal on Monday, July 27, 2026, winning the men’s 65 kilogrammes (kg) category at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo. The 32-year-old Malaysian weightlifter established three new Games records during the competition, finishing with a total lift of 299 kg.
Bidin's performance began in the snatch, where he successfully lifted 130 kg on his first attempt and 133 kg on his second. He was unsuccessful in his third attempt to lift 135 kg. In the clean and jerk, Bidin cleared 162 kg and then 166 kg in his first two attempts, but he failed to clear 170 kg on his final try.
The victory makes Bidin the first Malaysian weightlifter to achieve three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals. This feat surpasses the two gold medals earned by former national weightlifter Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim in 2002 and 2010.
Bidin's gold was the second for Malaysia at the Glasgow Games, following the victory of Mohamad Aniq Kasdan in the men’s 60 kg category. Malaysia’s medal count also includes a bronze medal won by women’s weightlifter Irene Jane Henry in the 48 kg category today and a bronze won by powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin in the men’s lightweight event on Friday, July 24. Malaysia currently holds two gold and two bronze medals.
The competition for the 65 kg category saw Raja Muthupandi of India take the silver medal with a total lift of 286 kg. Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea claimed the bronze medal after lifting 282 kg.
India's weightlifting campaign in Glasgow has seen several podium finishes. Along with Muthupandi's silver in the 65 kg class, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh secured a silver medal in the men's 60 kg event. Mirabai Chanu also completed a hat-trick of gold medals by winning the women's 48 kg title, which was India's first gold medal of the Games.
Chanu, a Tokyo Olympic silver medallist, set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch. After an initial failure at 82 kg in the clean and jerk, she cleared the weight on her second attempt and then lifted 85 kg on her third to set a new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth record. She ended her campaign with a successful 105 kg lift.
"I am extremely happy and also very emotional. I made so many sacrifices and overcame stress and injuries to reach the Games and win a medal. I didn't know I would set a Commonwealth record. I was only focused on completing the lift assigned by my coach,"
