Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ivory Coast international winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £120 million (€140 million). The 19-year-old has signed a seven-year contract that keeps him at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 30, 2033.

The transfer makes Diomande the most expensive African footballer in history, surpassing the £72 million Arsenal paid for Nicolas Pépé in 2019. If all performance-related clauses are triggered, he will become the fourth most expensive player in football history, trailing only Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Alexander Isak.

While the Spanish club did not officially reveal financial terms, reports in Spain suggest the package could rise to €125 million ($144.3 million) with an additional €10 million to 15 million in bonuses. Such a figure would eclipse the £115 million (€133.9 million) Real Madrid paid for Jude Bellingham in 2023.

Diomande arrives following a breakthrough 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign where he scored 12 league goals. Sources disagree on his league assists, with some reporting eight and others citing nine. Across all competitions, he recorded 13 goals and 10 assists, earning him the Bundesliga Young Player of the Season award and helping RB Leipzig secure a third-place finish and Champions League qualification.

"It is a childhood dream come true. I am all the more grateful to the management at RB Leipzig for making this move possible despite my current contract."

The winger, who developed at an academy in the United States and played for Leganés before joining Leipzig last year, also featured in all four of Ivory Coast’s matches at the FIFA World Cup. The African side reached the round of 32 before exiting the tournament against Norway.

Real Madrid successfully fended off competition from other European giants. Paris Saint-Germain withdrew from negotiations after RB Leipzig rejected a £102.5 million offer. Liverpool also saw an opening bid of £69 million rejected during their search for a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who joined Trabzonspor on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Diomande is the sixth summer signing under head coach José Mourinho, who returned for a second stint in June following a season where Real finished second to Barcelona in LaLiga and exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals. He joins Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi.

The arrival of the versatile winger coincides with a major retention effort at the club. On Thursday, Real Madrid announced that Brazil winger Vinicius Jr has agreed to a new six-year contract extension until June 30, 2032. Mourinho was reportedly hands-on in these discussions to prevent the 26-year-old from joining Arsenal.

Real Madrid continue to overhaul their squad and are currently targeting Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri. However, they face competition from Barcelona, as Rodri has reportedly informed the Catalan club of his willingness to negotiate contract terms.
