Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 to reach World Cup Round of 16
Switzerland secured a place in the World Cup round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at BC Place in Vancouver. The result represents Switzerland's first knockout victory at a World Cup since 1938, ending a streak of seven consecutive knockout games without a win.
The Swiss side, led by coach Murat Yakin, employed a tactical approach designed to absorb early pressure and strike on the counterattack. After Algeria dominated the first 10 minutes, Johan Manzambi broke through the defense on the left wing and provided a cutback for Breel Embolo, who steered the ball into the net from close range in the 10th minute. Embolo celebrated his 26th international goal with a knee slide.
Following the opening goal, Switzerland shifted to a five-man midfield out of possession to limit space. Algeria's best chance of the half came in stoppage time when Ibrahim Maza dragged a shot wide of the near post. Other sources indicate Fares Chaibi had a timid shot easily saved by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Switzerland struck again almost immediately after the restart. In the 46th minute, just 50 seconds into the second half, Dan Ndoye pounced on a loose ball following a half-hearted clearance by Rafik Belghali, placing a shot beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane to make it 2-0.

Algeria struggled to recover. Captain Riyad Mahrez fired a central effort straight at a defender, and the team's overall lack of clinical finishing was evident. While Algeria held 56 per cent of the possession—continuing a tournament-long trend of having more possession than their opponents in every match—they managed only two shots on target. Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic, who managed Switzerland from 2014 to 2021, admitted his side was unable to cope after conceding the first goal.
The final stages of the match were played in relative silence before substitute Fabian Rieder missed a clear opportunity in the 81st minute, scuffing a shot across the goal that Zidane collected.
A Veteran's Farewell
The match marked a milestone and an end for Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez. At 35 years and 131 days, Mahrez became the second-oldest African player to start a World Cup knockout match. Following the defeat, the Al Ahli forward stated in an interview with beIN Sports that the game was his last appearance with the national team
.
Algeria's exit continues a difficult run for the "Fennecs," who have now conceded two or more goals in six of their last eight World Cup matches. They join Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Senegal as African nations eliminated in the round of 32; only Morocco has progressed to the last 16.
Breakout Stars and Records
Johan Manzambi has emerged as a key figure for Switzerland. At 20 years and 261 days, Manzambi is the youngest player to record five goal involvements at a World Cup since 1966. He entered the tournament on the bench but earned starts in the final two games, contributing two goals and two assists overall.
The victory also highlighted the influence of captain Granit Xhaka, who earned his 150th international cap during the match. Additionally, Switzerland maintained a perfect record against African opposition at World Cups, with three wins and three clean sheets, including previous victories over Togo in 2006 and Cameroon in 2022.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the match in Vancouver after previously attending a game between Spain and Austria in Inglewood, California.
Next Steps
Switzerland has now reached the last 16 in four consecutive tournaments. They aim to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
The Swiss will return to BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 7, to face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana. That deciding match takes place on Friday, July 3.
