Russian missile and drone barrage kills eight and wounds dozens in Ukraine
Russia launched a massive aerial campaign against Ukraine on Saturday, targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas across the country. The assault resulted in multiple deaths and dozens of injuries, with Kyiv serving as a primary target.
In the northern city of Sumy, five people were killed and 30 wounded when two glide bombs struck a crowded area. One bomb hit a bus stop, leaving a yellow bus destroyed and its side ripped off. In the southern port city of Odesa, a missile strike killed two people and wounded one. Further casualties were reported in the east, where a drone hit a civilian enterprise in Kharkiv, wounding seven, and one person died in the town of Sloviansk.
The capital city of Kyiv faced an intense barrage of ballistic missiles and specialized drone swarms. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed via social media that casualties in the city included an 11-year-old boy, and four wounded individuals required emergency hospital treatment. The strikes caused fires at a transformer substation in the Darnytskyi district and a three-storey office building in the Solomianskyi district. Other damage included a heavily damaged railway locomotive, commercial warehouses, and a pharmacy. Outside city limits, firefighters used specialized trains to combat a 4,000-square-metre blaze at a regional infrastructure facility.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia fired 121 drones, six tactical cruise missiles, and six Iskander-M or S-400 ballistic missiles from the Bryansk region. While defense units downed 111 drones and two cruise missiles, all six ballistic targets breached the perimeter. According to domestic media, air defense teams were forced to operate sophisticated Patriot missile batteries in manual mode to conserve dwindling interceptor stocks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that civilian infrastructure was hit before air raid alerts were even issued. He noted that while most targets were downed, the ballistic missiles were not.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, via XThis surge in violence follows a sharp escalation in raids on the capital since the beginning of July, with local authorities reporting at least 60 deaths in Kyiv and its metropolitan area during that period. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russia's nationwide campaign successfully struck at least 11 infrastructure sites.
The attacks coincided with a diplomatic push by President Zelenskyy, who recently visited Germany, Norway, and Italy to seek more air defense systems. On July 8, during a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Donald Trump promised Zelenskyy a license to manufacture U.S. Patriot missiles on Ukrainian soil. Yuriy Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian air force, emphasized that Patriot systems are the only reliable means of shooting down ballistic missiles.

Robert Brovdi, the drone forces chief, stated his units struck 21 fuel tankers in the Sea of Azov overnight, along with seven other cargo and support ships. This brings the total number of vessels hit this week to 76. Zelenskyy said these strikes aim to force Russia to the negotiating table.
Russian authorities reported that a drone attack in Taganrog Bay on the Sea of Azov killed one seaman on a technical support vessel. Yury Slyusar, governor of the Rostov region, stated that while four vessels, including a methanol tanker, sustained damage, there was no risk of a methanol leak. Additionally, fires broke out at two fuel depots and the Taganrog sea port on Friday. The Russian defense ministry claimed its air defenses shot down 178 Ukrainian drones overnight across eight regions, the Crimean peninsula, and the Black and Azov seas.
The impact of Ukraine's strikes has reached deep into Russian territory. In the Novosibirsk region of Siberia, residents were urged to work remotely and limit travel due to a fuel crisis. Earlier in the week, Ukraine struck an oil refinery in Omsk, one of Russia's largest processing facilities. While President Vladimir Putin acknowledged fuel shortages, he claimed they are
