Meta platforms Facebook, Instagram and Messenger suffer widespread outage
Meta has confirmed the restoration of services after a technical failure disrupted Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The company addressed the issues via social media after Downdetector reported spikes in user error reports.
Meta platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads experienced a significant service disruption, affecting users globally. The instability began to manifest across international markets on a Tuesday morning, with reports of connectivity issues, login failures, and broken platform features circulating throughout the day.
Tracking data from Downdetector indicated that issues for Facebook and Instagram began emerging at 9:00 AM EDT. By 10:00 AM, thousands of users in the United States had reported difficulties. For Instagram, the primary disruption centered on the comment section, where users were unable to engage with posts; despite visual cues suggesting comments existed, attempts to access them resulted in errors. Facebook users faced different obstacles, including login failures and an inability to access personal profiles even after successful authentication.
While Meta does not maintain official status pages for its user-facing applications, the company acknowledged the situation through its official accounts on the social platform X. The official Instagram account confirmed a technical issue
impacting the ability to access the platform. Similarly, the official WhatsApp account stated that the company was aware of some issues accessing
the app and was working toward a solution. By Wednesday afternoon, reports indicated that while services were largely being restored, some users continued to encounter difficulties specifically with direct messaging features, which displayed error messages stating, We're sorry, but something went wrong. Please try that again.
The outage prompted a substantial volume of user reports, with figures peaking on Downdetector at approximately 1:30 p.m. Eastern, reaching 75,000 for Instagram and 100,000 for Facebook. Although Meta maintains its various applications as largely separate systems, they share underlying technical infrastructure. In the past, Meta explored strategies to make these platforms more interoperable, including allowing cross-platform messaging, though the company has appeared to distance itself from those plans amid regulatory scrutiny.
By early Thursday, Meta confirmed via X that it had resolved the majority of the technical difficulties, stating it was 99 per cent of the way
to a full restoration with only final checks remaining. The company issued an apology to affected users, and individual platforms began confirming their return to service. WhatsApp announced to users, We're back, happy chatting!
while Instagram posted, Andddd we're back – sorry for the wait, and thanks for bearing with us.
This incident is the latest in a series of system failures for the company. Earlier events have impacted varying numbers of subscribers, including a March 2024 outage that affected more than half a million Facebook users and lasted approximately two hours.
