Andy Serkis Defends 'Hunt for Gollum' Cast Amid Diversity Criticism

Andy Serkis is pushing back against criticism regarding the lack of racial diversity in the cast of the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hunt for Gollum. In an interview with BBC News published Monday, July 13, the 62-year-old actor and director stated that the production would not engage in politically correct just-casting-for-the sake-of-casting-and-ticking-boxes.

The film, which marks the first new live-action Lord of the Rings movie since 2014's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, features a predominantly white cast. Serkis defended the creative choice by citing the influence of Norse mythology on J.R.R. Tolkien's work. He specifically noted that the Shire feels very, very much like a very, a very white region where inhabitants are not concerned with what happens beyond their borders but know they don't want people coming in.

While Serkis acknowledged that there have been criticisms, he maintained that diversity in the film would only be included where relevant basically.

The project represents a shift in leadership for the franchise. While Peter Jackson continues to serve as a writer and producer, Serkis is stepping in to direct. The story is described as a deep dive into the psychology and history of Gollum before he became Gollum, while also exploring Gandalf's questions regarding the origin of the ring held by Bilbo Baggins. Serkis teased that the hunt for the character takes place across two different dimensions.

The cast brings back several franchise veterans alongside new additions:

  • Andy Serkis returns as Gollum and Sméagol.
  • Ian McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf.
  • Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins.
  • Lee Pace returns as Thranduil.
  • Jamie Dornan takes over the role of Strider, also known as Aragorn.
  • Anya Taylor-Joy plays Seren, a lethal agent of King Thranduil and a Sindar elf from the Woodland Realm.
  • Kate Winslet appears as Marigol, the matriarch of the Stoors.
  • Leo Woodall plays Dúnedain Halvard.

The casting of The Hunt for Gollum stands in contrast to the approach taken by the Amazon television series The Rings of Power. That production introduced the franchise's first Black elf, Arondir, and first Black dwarf, Princess Disa. Those decisions were met with online criticism from fans who claimed the casting departed from Tolkien's descriptions. At the time, executive producer Lindsey Weber told Vanity Fair that it felt only natural for the adaptation to reflect the real world.

Serkis himself has previously discussed the importance of representation. During the filming of the 2018 movie Black Panther, Serkis and costar Martin Freeman were the only two white actors in a predominantly Black cast. Serkis told Radio Times magazine that being in that position provided an incredible perspective and a more personal understanding of the experience of ethnic minorities in the film industry.

The screenplay for the new film is a collaborative effort between original trilogy writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, as well as Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Serkis is currently filming the movie in New Zealand while simultaneously promoting the U.K. Release of his animated adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm.

Beyond the immediate prequel, the cinematic universe is continuing to expand. Serkis confirmed that a different film titled Shadow of the Past, written by Stephen Colbert, is in development, though Serkis will not be directing that specific project.

Warner Bros. Has scheduled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum for a worldwide theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
