House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 premieres June 28 on HBO Max

The Targaryen civil war enters a devastating new phase this Sunday, June 28, 2026, as House of the Dragon returns for its second episode of the season. After a premiere that delivered the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, the series continues its weekly rollout on HBO and HBO Max. Episode 2 will be available starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, with linear HBO broadcasts also scheduled for 10:08 p.m. ET and 11:56 p.m. ET.

The second installment clocks in at 68 minutes, slightly shorter than the 72-minute season premiere, which stood as the longest opening episode in the show's history. Viewers in the UK and other international regions can stream the episode on Now and Sky Atlantic in the early hours of Monday, June 29.

The Fallout of the Gullet

The season opened on Sunday, June 21, with a massive naval clash where Triarchy forces attacked Lord Corlys Velaryon’s blockade of King’s Landing. While the arrival of Princess Baela and Prince Jacaerys on dragon-back initially turned the tide for Team Black, the victory was marred by tragedy. Triarchy archers struck Jacaerys’ dragon, Vermax, causing both to crash into the sea. Though the crown prince freed himself from the beast, he and Vermax perished after being targeted by Triarchy crossbowmen from a nearby ship.

The emotional weight of this loss is expected to dominate Episode 2. Preview footage suggests a shift in tone for Rhaenyra, who began the season in joy but is now seen grieving and asking, What have you done? A "weeks ahead" trailer also shows Baela and Rhaena appearing stricken, while Daemon asks Rhaenyra if she will let the prince die in vain.

Shifting Power Dynamics

Beyond the naval carnage, the political landscape in Westeros remains volatile. In King’s Landing, Alicent is conspiring against her own sons, sending Aemond out of the city to facilitate Rhaenyra’s eventual takeover. However, this window of opportunity may be brief; it is expected that Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar, will arrive at Harrenhal, potentially leading to significant bloodshed.

Elsewhere, Daemon and his forces have joined with the men of the North following their victory. Meanwhile, Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower continue their march across the Riverlands, lacking the support of Team Green's dragons and remaining fearful of the winged beasts commanded by Team Black.

Production and Critical Reception

The third season, which adapts the second half of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, was ordered on June 13, 2024, and filmed between March and October 2025 under the sole showrunnership of Ryan Condal. Condal described the Battle of the Gullet as arguably the craziest episode of television ever made and likened the storytelling momentum to a major crossing of the Rubicon that leads toward tragedy.

Critics have responded positively to the new season's scale. On Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds a 95% approval rating based on 42 reviews. Actor Tom Glynn-Carney, who portrays Aegon II Targaryen, stated the season is going to be massive.

Viewing Information

Season 3 consists of eight episodes, a shorter run than the 10-episode format of the first season. The season will conclude with its finale on August 9.

To access the series, a subscription to HBO Max is required. Monthly options include a basic plan with ads for $10.99 or a standard no-ads plan starting at $18.99. Annual subscriptions are offered at $109.99 for the basic plan and $184.99 for the standard plan. Additionally, a 40% discount on annual subscriptions is available from June 18 to July 15.

While the current conflict unfolds, HBO has already confirmed that a fourth and final season was ordered in November 2025, making Season 3 the penultimate chapter of the on-screen Targaryen dynasty.
