Spider-Man: Brand New Day breaks all-time domestic opening box office record

The latest installment of the Spider-Man franchise has rewritten cinema history. Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $360 million in ticket sales over its opening weekend from theaters in the U.S. And Canada, establishing the largest North American opening weekend on record.

The film, which premiered on Friday, July 31, surpassed the previous domestic record held by 2019's Avengers: Endgame. While Endgame earned $357 million during its debut weekend, Brand New Day climbed past that mark when final numbers were released on Monday, August 3. Earlier reports had estimated the film's Sunday gross at $355 million, but the final total came in higher.

Globally, the movie has already generated $932 million in just three days. Despite the domestic victory, Avengers: Endgame maintains the record for the highest global debut with $1.2 billion.

A Shift in Tone and Talent

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, this fourth solo entry for Tom Holland is the first live-action film in the series since 2021's No Way Home. The latter earned $260 million in its North American opening and finished its run with $1.9 billion worldwide.

The new narrative sees Peter Parker operating largely alone while his former best friends, M.J. And Ned, finish college at MIT. Zendaya, 29, and Jacob Batalon, 29, return as these characters, who eventually drift back into Peter's orbit after graduating and returning to New York City. Along with allies including Yelena Belova and the Punisher, played by Florence Pugh and Jon Bernthal respectively, Peter faces a mysterious threat that is nearly invisible and that only he can sense.

The film introduces a darker tone and explores Peter's struggle to balance his personal life with crime-fighting. It also features a physical transformation for the protagonist, who develops the ability to naturally shoot webs. Additionally, Sadie Sink, 24, joins the cast as the mutant telepath Jean Grey.

However, not all critical reception is seamless. Eli Glasner questioned if the movie attempts to cram in too much, which may detract from the grounded tone established throughout the film.

Market Competition and IMAX Expansion

The success of Brand New Day comes during a strong year for moviegoing. Nolan's film, which also stars Holland, Zendaya, and Bernthal, earned $124.5 million in its North American opening weekend and has since reached $395.5 million domestically and $911 million globally.

Other notable 2026 hits that have passed the billion-dollar mark internationally include The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Toy Story 5, and the Michael Jackson biopic Michael. Other successes this year include Hoppers, Minions & Monsters, Backrooms, Obsession, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Project Hail Mary.

The film has also seen massive success in Premium Large Formats. Dolby Cinema generated a record weekend of $10 million across 177 locations. Regarding IMAX, CEO Rich Gelfond stated on Monday, August 3:

"Spider-Man has been among the most bankable superheroes at the global box office for over two decades - with the franchise delivering $365 million in IMAX receipts to date - and 'Brand New Day' is taking that legacy to new heights with its record-breaking opening weekend."

The film will expand to IMAX digital screens in North America beginning Thursday, August 6, as the exclusive window for The Odyssey concludes. However, The Odyssey will remain the only feature in the 41 theaters worldwide equipped for 70mm IMAX, including the Regal Hacienda Crossings in Dublin and the AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco.
