William Orbit, the Grammy Award-winning British producer and musician who blended electronic music with mainstream pop, died at his home on July 23, 2026. He was 69.

Family and friends confirmed the death in a statement shared via Orbit's official Instagram account, noting that he would be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness. The family requested privacy during the time of loss.

Born William Mark Wainwright in London on December 15, 1956, Orbit grew up in East London to parents who were school teachers. He left school at 16 without qualifications, a decision that reportedly disappointed his parents. Before finding success in the music industry, he worked a series of low-skilled, low-paying jobs. The name Orbit was originally a nickname given to him by friends, which he eventually adopted professionally.

Orbit first gained recognition in the 1980s through projects such as Torch Song and Bassomatic. He later established a solo career featuring the Strange Cargo series and the 1999 album Pieces in a Modern Style, which reached number two on the UK charts by using electronic reinterpretations of orchestral works. Across his solo career, he produced between 11 and 12 studio albums.

Collaborations and Creative Tension

Orbit achieved global prominence in 1998 through his work on Madonna's album Ray of Light, which moved the singer into trip hop and electronica. The project earned Orbit two Grammy Awards for best pop album and best dance recording. He won a third Grammy for best song written for visual media for the 1999 hit Beautiful Stranger, featured in the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Orbit also worked with Madonna on her 2000 album Music.

In 1999, the band Blur hired Orbit for the album 13 as they sought a departure from previous producer Stephen Street. The collaboration coincided with a darker lyrical shift for the group and produced the singles Tender, Coffee & TV, and No Distance Left To Run. Orbit later contributed to the track Sweet Song on the 2003 album Think Tank.

Recalling the process with Blur, Orbit noted a clash between the punk direction favored by Graham and the experimental direction of Damon. Orbit stated that Graham prevailed, noting that tension that had grown on previous albums came to a head here.

Orbit's portfolio extended to a wide array of international artists. He produced the All Saints number one single Pure Shores, as well as the track Black Coffee and the 2018 song After All from their album Testament. His credits include work with Pink, No Doubt, Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Beth Orton, and the Sugababes.

Orbit had remained vocal about his creative independence until the end. In March, he ruled out a potential reunion with Madonna for a successor to Ray of Light, stating that such a project Can get exhausting. He claimed to have an album ready that he believed was the true successor to that record, though he noted that his outreach to Madonna had received Nil response.
