Current public health advice regarding exercise and protein intake may be outdated, according to a perspective paper published June 16, 2026, in Frontiers in Nutrition. The research argues that existing guidelines focus primarily on the minimum intake required to prevent disease rather than the levels necessary to maximize long-term health.
Chris Macdonald, PhD, lab director and fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, suggests that protein intake could be increased to approximately twice the current minimum recommendations. This would bring intake up to 1 gram per pound of body weight. For context, current baseline guidelines recommend roughly 0.34 to 0.36 grams per pound of body weight per day, or 0.75 to 0.8 grams per kilogram.
Increasing protein levels is linked to several wide-ranging benefits. The research concludes that higher intake supports muscle recovery, aids in strength gains and fat loss, and helps preserve bone health, which reduces the risk of fractures.
Personalized Nutrition and High-Risk Groups
Experts note that a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition is often ineffective. Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RDN, president of KAK Consulting and a dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Wellness & Preventive Medicine, stated that protein needs vary based on health status, goals, activity level, and age.
Certain populations may benefit from significantly higher protein levels than general guidelines suggest, including:
- Physically active adults and athletes
- People older than age 40
- Pregnant people
- Individuals using GLP-1 medications
- Those attempting weight loss
- People with cardiometabolic diseases, such as obesity
Michelle Routhenstein, MS, RD, a preventive cardiology dietitian at EntirelyNourished, suggests a range of 1.2-1.6 grams per kilogram per day for those seeking to support metabolic health, preserve lean muscle, improve satiety, and maintain physical function.
Implementation and Dietary Balance
Dietitians recommend spreading protein intake across meals throughout the day. Kirkpatrick suggests incorporating eggs or Greek yogurt at breakfast, followed by lean proteins like fish, chicken, lentils, or beans at lunch and dinner. Protein-rich snacks can include edamame, hummus with vegetables, roasted chickpeas, string cheese, or cottage cheese with berries.
For those with low appetites or those on GLP-1 medications, protein shakes can serve as a convenient tool. Routhenstein emphasizes that protein should be integrated into a heart-healthy dietary pattern. She warns that focusing exclusively on protein could crowd out
essential nutrients such as folate, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, and fiber.
Protein sources can be tailored to individual dietary preferences. Routhenstein notes that vegans can meet these targets through tofu, legumes, tempeh, and beans, while others may use a combination of animal and plant-based proteins.
Safety Limits and Risks
There are upper limits to safe protein consumption. Routhenstein states that for healthy adults with normal kidney function, intakes up to about 2 grams per kilogram per day appear safe. However, there is little evidence that exceeding this limit provides further health benefits. Long-term very high intakes may increase the risk of vascular, kidney, or digestive issues.

Protein intake is not a standalone solution for longevity. Kirkpatrick asserts that regular physical activity is a critical pillar for maintaining brain health, reducing certain cancer risks, and preserving independence during aging.
While eating more protein without muscle challenge may offer some benefits, the maximum return is achieved by combining adequate protein with regular physical activity and resistance training.
