Met Police arrest man after 25-year-old shot dead in Clapham

The Metropolitan Police have launched a murder investigation and arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a 25-year-old man was shot dead outside a pub in south London on Monday, 10 August.

Emergency services were called to Landor Road in Clapham North at 9:59pm following reports of gunfire. The victim was attacked outside the Landor Pub, near the junction of Landor Road and Willington Road. Despite the arrival of paramedics within three minutes, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson detailed the emergency response, stating:

"We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and paramedics in fast response cars. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London's Air Ambulance. Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a man was pronounced dead at the scene."

Separate from the fatality, a second man attended a hospital with a gunshot wound shortly after the shooting. The Met Police said they are awaiting an update on his condition.

Witness accounts and crime scene

Residents described hearing a series of loud bangs just after 10pm. One witness told Metro they heard four pops and initially mistook them for fireworks. Another resident, identified as Sam, said she heard sirens and believed there were five or something bangs. A different witness reported hearing two loud bangs while walking toward a shop on Landor Road.

That witness claimed to have seen a man running away around the corner toward Clapham North, shouting something twice, before seeing the victim lying on the floor.

On Tuesday, 11 August, a police cordon remained in place, and a forensic tent was erected on the pavement outside the Fenwick Estate. Police have visited nearby homes with Ring doorbells and are reviewing footage from the Landor pub. A staff member at the pub stated the shooting occurred outside and was nothing to do with the pub, though they noted the local area had got worse recently, mentioning a recent fatal stabbing a few streets away.

Images from the scene showed splatters of blood on the floor within the cordoned area. A former school friend of the victim told Metro the man was a lovely, bouncy sort of guy and noted they had played together in a play park located 100 metres from where he died.

Community reaction

The violence has caused distress among locals. One resident expressed fear for her two-year-old grandson, stating:

"It's sad what happened, that someone lost a life,"

Pastor Lorraine, an anti-knife crime activist, described the sight of forensic evidence in inner-city communities as horrifying and deeply traumatising, specifically noting that many children on school summer holidays may have witnessed the scene from their windows.

"We understand that incident will cause concern within the local community and an increased police presence will remain in the area throughout the day as our enquiries continue. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family for their tragic loss."

The victim's family has been notified and is receiving support from specialist officers.

Police are urging anyone with information or witnesses of the shooting to contact them on 101, quoting reference 8379/10AUG, or to contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. An increased police presence is expected to remain in the area as enquiries continue.
