Welshpool police launch murder probe after man dies on town center street

Dyfed-Powys Police have launched a murder investigation after a man died in the town center of Welshpool during the early hours of Sunday, June 28.

Emergency services were called to Church Street, located off the main street of Welshpool, Powys, after reports of an injured man. A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police stated that the force received the report at 1.16am. While officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from the ambulance service, paramedics were unable to save the man.

One man, aged 22, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Crime scene operations

Police cordoned off Church Street, a thoroughfare filled with businesses and shops, shortly before 3am. The road closures extend from the crossroads on Berriew Street to a point further down the road near the TIC.

Witnesses reported a significant police presence, with between six and eight police vehicles and at least one ambulance at the scene. A black forensics tent was erected on the road, specifically positioned outside The Cornstore restaurant. Reports indicate a forensics officer dressed in white was seen entering the tent during the morning of June 28.

The security measures caused local disruptions. A staff member at The Cornstore restaurant told WalesOnline the business would not open on Sunday due to the expectation that the street would remain closed for most of the day.

Community reaction

The incident occurred immediately following local celebrations. Welshpool mayor Reverend William Rowell noted that the Welshpool Carnival took place on Saturday, an event he said brought the whole town together. He described the news of the death as a huge shock.

Councillor Morag Bailey, the deputy mayor of Welshpool, also expressed her shock and described the situation as a very sad day for our town. Both officials offered condolences to the family of the deceased.

Police appeal

Dyfed-Powys Police have advised the public to avoid the cordoned area while inquiries are carried out. The force confirmed that an additional police presence will be maintained in the area over the coming days.

Authorities are seeking information regarding the incident. Members of the public are asked to contact police by calling 101 or to provide information anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555111.

The investigation remains ongoing with the 22-year-old suspect still in custody.
