Arsenal sign Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in €40m deal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Greece international Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge on a five-year contract. The transfer, valued at £34m (approximately €40m), sets a record for the Belgian Pro League.

The 24-year-old winger arrives in North London as a direct replacement for Leandro Trossard, who departed for Besiktas in a £17m deal this week. Tzolis will wear the No.17 shirt for the Premier League champions.

A return to England

This move marks a return to England for Tzolis, who previously spent two seasons with Norwich City. During that tenure, he scored three goals in 30 matches, though he failed to find the net in 14 Premier League appearances. Since leaving Norwich, he spent one season with Fortuna Dusseldorf in Germany’s second tier before moving to Belgium in the summer of 2024.

His time in Belgium was defined by high productivity. Last season, Tzolis recorded 17 goals and 23 assists in 36 Belgian Pro League appearances. Across all competitions, he tallied 22 goals and 29 assists. According to the New York Times, Tzolis was one of Europe's most productive attackers last season; among players in Europe's top five domestic leagues, only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane produced more goal contributions.

Sporting director Andrea Berta described the signing as an "extremely versatile attacking player" and an "excellent finisher with both feet" who thrives in tight spaces.

Tactical profile and versatility

While primarily a left winger, Tzolis is also capable of playing as a No. 10. Former Club Brugge assistant manager Hayk Milkon told Sky Sports that Tzolis is strongest when starting wide on the left and moving inside, though he is equally effective in one-on-one situations on the flank.

Milkon also highlighted the player's physical reliability and work rate, noting that Tzolis maintained stable performances while playing every three or four days during Champions League campaigns. His availability at Club Brugge mirrored Trossard's record at Arsenal, with his longest sideline spell being only two matches.

Analysis of his play reveals a player who utilizes a low backlift and follow-through to generate driven shots. His experience in Europe includes a goal against Atalanta last September and an 89th-minute equalizer against Atletico Madrid in February. In the Champions League, he has contributed seven goals and assists in 21 appearances.

Defensively, Tzolis is noted for his pace and awareness. He has been used by Club Brugge to press opponents from their blindside and has dropped into the defensive line to track runs and recover ground using his speed.

Strategic context

The acquisition follows Arsenal's failure to sign their top attacking target, Morgan Rogers, who instead moved to Chelsea in a British-record £117m deal. While Tzolis is viewed as Trossard's replacement, reports indicate the club remains interested in other marquee options, such as Bradley Barcola, and Gabriel Martinelli could potentially leave.

Tzolis's interest in the move was piqued after Arsenal defeated Club Brugge 3-0 during the UEFA Champions League league phase. Following a one-hour conversation with Mikel Arteta, the player expressed his pride in joining the champions of England.
