Chelsea confirm Welbeck signing from Brighton

Chelsea have finalized the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton and Hove Albion. The 35-year-old forward has signed a two-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2028, according to the club's official website on August 1, 2026.

The deal, reported to be worth in the region of £5million, represents a shift in Chelsea's recruitment strategy. Welbeck is the first player over the age of 26 the club has paid a transfer fee for since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022. His arrival also means Chelsea may field a player over 30 for the first time since Thiago Silva's final appearance more than two years ago.

Welbeck joins Xabi Alonso’s squad during their pre-season tour, arriving hours after the Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Sydney Super Cup. He is expected to link up with the team immediately and could make his debut next Thursday (AEST) against Juventus. Following that, Chelsea are scheduled to play AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim before their Premier League campaign begins with an away match against Fulham on August 25 (AEST).

Impact at Brighton

Welbeck departs the south coast as Brighton's all-time leading scorer in Premier League history with 46 goals. In the 2025-2026 season, he scored 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances, equalling the record for the most goals by a Brighton player in the top flight, a mark held by Glenn Murray since 2018-2019. His contributions helped the Seagulls secure an eighth-place finish and a spot in the UEFA Conference League qualifying round.

Across all competitions for Brighton, Welbeck recorded 201 appearances, 51 goals, and 13 assists. Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler praised the striker's influence upon his exit.

Welbeck brings a decorated pedigree to the squad. He began his senior career at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, where he won the Premier League, two League Cups, the Community Shield, and the FIFA Club World Cup. He also spent five seasons at Arsenal, scoring 32 goals in 126 appearances, before stints with Watford and Brighton.

While the club adds experience, it is also rewarding current talent. Chelsea is reportedly set to offer a new contract with increased salary and improved terms to 24-year-old Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, who scored 20 goals in 50 appearances during his debut season.
