Five-star RB David Gabriel Georges commits to Tennessee

The University of Tennessee has secured its most significant recruiting victory of the 2027 cycle. David Gabriel Georges, a five-star running back and the top high school football player in Tennessee, committed to the Volunteers on July 22.

Georges announced his decision via livestream at the Baylor School in Chattanooga. In choosing Tennessee, he passed over offers from Ohio State and Ole Miss. The recruit had more than 30 Division I offers before narrowing his selection to those three finalists.

The commitment represents a historic acquisition for head coach Josh Heupel. According to 247Sports Composite, which aggregates top scouting services, Georges is the No. 2 running back in the country and the No. 10 overall player in the 2027 class. He is the highest-rated running back recruit to join Tennessee under Heupel and the first five-star commit for the Volunteers in this recruiting cycle.

The arrival of a player with this rating is a rarity for the program. Gabriel Georges is the highest-rated running back to play for Tennessee since Adrian Peterson in 2006. Other five-star running backs who signed with the school since 2000 include Bryce Brown from the 2009 class, as well as Gerald Riggs, Jabari Davis, Cedric Houston, and Derrick Tinsley, all from 2001 or 2002.

For Heupel, the commitment marks a departure from his typical roster construction. While his Tennessee teams have frequently ranked among the SEC leaders in rushing, those offenses have relied on three-star and four-star recruits who developed into NFL draft picks and SEC standouts. All four of Heupel's starters at Tennessee were three-star recruits according to 247Sports Composite.

The coach has experience with elite backfield talent from his time as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Oklahoma in the early 2000s, where the Sooners regularly signed four- and five-star running backs. However, some of the higher-rated recruits during his Tennessee tenure, such as four-star athletes Dee Beckwith, Len’Neth Whitehead, Justin Williams-Thomas, and Peyton Lewis, did not earn starting roles and eventually transferred.

Gabriel Georges cited a personal connection to the staff as a primary driver for his decision.

He noted that conversations with the strength and conditioning coach convinced him the program would be a great fit for his development. Additionally, running backs coach De’Rail Sims served as a deciding factor. Gabriel Georges stated that Heupel made it clear he wanted him on the team and intended to use me as a weapon.

National recruiting analysts highlight the physical profile Georges brings to Knoxville, describing a downhill running style characterized by the ability to break tackles and utilize a second gear of speed to win races. This blend of power and speed has made him one of the most coveted recruits in the nation regardless of position.

This commitment is the first verbal pledge for the Volunteers in nearly a month; the program previously landed four-star offensive lineman Q’Mari Hudson on June 13. The addition of Georges energizes a fanbase hopeful for a return to the College Football Playoffs.

Gabriel Georges is eligible to sign in December and is expected to make his debut for the Volunteers during the 2027 season.
