Eric Bieniemy's Son Arrested for Shooting Mother in Virginia Home

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy's family is dealing with a tragic incident, as his son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. The arrest came after Elijah allegedly shot his mother, Mia Bieniemy, 57, multiple times at the family's home in Ashburn, Virginia, on Sunday night.

According to sources, Mia Bieniemy was hospitalized in stable condition with serious injuries, including multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and arm. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office confirmed that police responded to a report of a shooting at a home on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn at 7:32 p.m. ET on Sunday. Elijah Bieniemy was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

Eric Bieniemy was not home at the time of the incident, as he was in St. Joseph, Missouri, at Missouri Western State's campus for the Chiefs' training camp. He left the camp and was not in attendance for Monday's practice, according to sources. The Chiefs released a brief statement saying they are "aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family" but provided no further details.

Eric Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs this year as their offensive coordinator, a position he previously held from 2018 to 2022. He had spent time with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA's football program before rejoining the Chiefs. His return was seen as a key move to rebuild the team's offense, which had struggled in his absence. Chiefs coach Andy Reid had expressed his excitement about having Bieniemy back, saying, "Yeah, I'm fired up to have him back... He brings great energy. Loves doing what he's doing.
