Chiefs coach Eric Bieniemy's wife allegedly shot by their son

Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is hospitalized in stable condition after she was shot Sunday night at the family residence in Ashburn, Virginia.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies responded to a shooting call at approximately 7:32 p.m. ET on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 57-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds. While police did not publicly name the victim, sources confirmed the woman was Mia Bieniemy. Those sources told ESPN that she was shot in the chest and arm.

The couple's son, 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested in connection with the shooting. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, he has been charged with discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and malicious wounding. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Eric Bieniemy was in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday for the second practice of training camp at the Missouri Western State campus. He left camp following the incident and was absent from the team's workout on Monday.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke after Monday's practice, describing Mia as a saint and one of God’s good blessings. Reid noted that Mia is stable, which is a plus and expressed his support for the offensive coordinator, stating, "Our hearts to go out to Eric Bieniemy. … We all love EB and you hate seeing those things happens. … Real life. You take care of that."

The Kansas City Chiefs provided a statement to the Associated Press saying, Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. In a separate statement obtained by ESPN, the team confirmed they were aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.

Bieniemy recently returned to the Chiefs in January to serve as offensive coordinator after a three-year absence from the organization. He previously spent 10 seasons working under Reid in Kansas City and served as the running backs coach for the 2025 season. His time away from the Chiefs included coaching stints with the Commanders in 2023 and UCLA in 2024.

During his prior tenure as offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, Bieniemy was a key part of several Super Bowl championship seasons. Meanwhile, Mia Bieniemy has maintained a private life, largely avoiding the public spotlight throughout her husband's coaching career.

Authorities have not publicly discussed a possible motive for the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
