FIFA investigating on-pitch brawl after Spain vs Argentina World Cup final

FIFA has launched an investigation into a physical altercation between Argentinian and Spanish players that erupted following the World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The global governing body confirmed Monday that its disciplinary committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) regarding the post-match incidents.

The clash followed a tense match decided in extra time, with Spain securing a 1-0 victory over Argentina via a goal by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute. Spain's victory was preceded by Argentina being reduced to 10 men when Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card in stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes.

According to reports and broadcast footage, the melee began immediately after referee Slavko Vincic blew the final whistle. BBC footage appears to show Argentina defender Nahuel Molina striking Spain captain Rodri in the midriff as Rodri ran across the pitch. This initial encounter escalated when Spain's Eric Garcia intervened, prompting Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes to enter the fray.

Video replays indicate Paredes appeared to grab Garcia by the throat. When Spanish substitute Gavi jumped in to assist, Paredes pushed him to the ground. Other players were also embroiled in the scuffle; Thiago Almada was seen throwing Gavi to the turf, and Paredes reportedly lunged at the prone Spanish international. Additionally, assistant coach Robert Ayala is reportedly being looked into for an alleged altercation with Dani Olmo, while Nicolas Otamendi was seen engaging in a verbal confrontation with Rodri.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and other staff members eventually intervened to separate the players. Despite initial reports, FIFA confirmed to BBC Sport that Paredes was not issued a red card after the final whistle.

While some players shared a peaceful moment—including a warm embrace between Lamine Yamal and Argentina captain Lionel Messi—the overall atmosphere remained bitter. Spain's players formed a guard of honor for the runners-up as they received silver medals. In contrast, Argentina players reportedly turned their backs on the new champions as Spain was handed the gold medals and the trophy.

The probe will involve a review of official match documentation, referee reports, and video footage. Under the FDC, the prosecutor can propose disciplinary measures against individuals, clubs, or member associations. For violent conduct, the code cites a ban of at least three matches or "an appropriate period of time," and FIFA retains the power to extend such bans globally across all competitions.

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) may also face monetary penalties. The AFA was previously fined more than $24,500 for offensive behavior and fair play violations following their 2022 World Cup win.

This is not the first investigation facing Argentina during the tournament. FIFA is also probing the team's display of a political banner after their semifinal victory over England. Defender Lisandro Martinez and substitute Giovani Lo Celso held a banner reading Las Malvinas son Argentinas (The Falklands are Argentinian), which violated the stadium code of conduct and drew criticism from United Kingdom government officials.

FIFA has provided no specific timetable for the completion of the brawl investigation. Argentina has no immediate fixtures scheduled, with the next international window expected to feature four games between September 21 and October 6. The team's immediate focus will shift to friendly matches while the status of their competitive calendar remains undecided, as FIFA has not yet determined the number of teams for the 2030 World Cup and there are no current qualifiers for the 2028 Copa América.
