France beats Paraguay 1-0 to advance to World Cup quarterfinals
In a match defined by stifling heat and relentless physicality, France advanced to the 2026 FIFA men's World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, July 4, with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay. The lone goal came via a 70th-minute penalty kick converted by captain Kylian Mbappe in Philadelphia.
The encounter took place at Lincoln Financial Field amidst the United States' 250th birthday celebrations. The atmosphere was heightened by pre-match ceremonies featuring The Roots, the Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale, and a military flyover, while temperatures hovered around 100 degrees, reaching 39 degrees Celsius (102.2°F). The humidity was so extreme that fans were seen fanning themselves with pieces of paper to cope with the heat.
France dominated the ball with 76% possession, but struggled to penetrate Paraguay's five-back formation. It took Les Bleus more than 20 minutes to record their first shot, and neither side managed a shot on target during the first half. Paraguay, which had reached the Round of 16 after a penalty shootout win over Germany, employed a minimalist defensive strategy designed to frustrate opponents and force the game into extra time.
The deadlock broke after substitute Désiré Doué was tripped in the box. Following a VAR review, referee Ilgiz Tantashev awarded France a penalty. Mbappe converted the spot-kick, wrongfooting goalkeeper Orlando Gill by leaning left and slotting the ball into the right back corner.
The goal was Mbappe's seventh of the tournament and his 19th in 19 World Cup appearances. This puts him level with Lionel Messi in the current tournament's Golden Boot race and just one goal behind Messi for the all-time World Cup scoring record.
Beyond the tactics, the match was marked by significant aggression. A shoving match occurred in the 35th minute after Mbappe took exception to a play by Andrés Cubas. While French players earned three yellow cards—including one for Michael Olise in stoppage time following simulation by Matías Galarza—Paraguay avoided any cards despite a physical approach.
Following the match, Mbappe addressed Paraguay's tactics.
"We knew what kind of game we were going to get, but we showed that we are not just a team that can play attacking football,"

He added that if the team had to get our hands dirty,
they would. According to Men in Blazers, Mbappe further stated, If they tell us to [expletive] off, we will also tell them to [expletive] off.
Midfielder Rayan Cherki echoed these sentiments, stating that the French team had been prepared for Paraguay's tendency to wage war
and try to get opposing players off their game.
Despite the win, France faced late pressure. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan made his first save of the match in the 90th minute. In stoppage time, Orlando Gill denied Mbappe twice in quick succession to preserve the 1-0 scoreline.
France's starting lineup featured Maignan; Kounde, Upamecano, Saliba, Digne; Kone, Rabiot; Dembele, Olise, Barcola; and Mbappe. Manu Kone started in central midfield in place of the injured Aurelien Tchouameni. Paraguay started Gill; Caceres, Velazquez, G. Gomez, Alderete, Alonso; D. Gomez, Cubas, Galarza; and Almiron, Enciso.
France will now face Morocco in the quarterfinals on Thursday, July 9, in Boston. The two teams previously met in the 2022 World Cup semifinal, a match France won before losing the final to Argentina.
