Arsenal beat Coventry 3-0 to open Premier League title defense
Arsenal began their Premier League title defense with a dominant 3-0 home victory over newly promoted Coventry City on Friday. The result continues a strong run for the champions, who have now scored six unanswered goals across their opening match and a Community Shield win over Manchester City.
Coventry entered the match marking a return to the top flight after a 25-year absence. Despite starting with energy and intent, Frank Lampard's side suffered a brutal reality check at the Emirates Stadium. The first goal arrived in the 15th minute when Riccardo Calafiori pounced on a careless turnover by Milan van Ewijk and delivered a cross to Kai Havertz, who finished with a clinical low strike.
The lead was doubled in the 23rd minute. Following a sequence involving Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, Christos Tzolis sent in a cross that goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only parry into the path of Bukayo Saka for a close-range finish.
The match remained one-sided after the interval. In the 49th minute, Saka and Ben White combined to break through the Coventry defense, allowing captain Martin Odegaard to seal the win. Odegaard's shot was described as scuffed and miscued, but it managed to bumble past Rushworth.
Following the match, Odegaard told Sky Sports:
"The first game is always a bit nervy. They played well from the start. They have a lot of physical players, and they gave us a good battle. After that we controlled the game well, and were pretty solid. We looked good out there. There are things we could have done better. We could have scored and created more chances."

At halftime, Bukayo Saka expressed his satisfaction with the team's form, telling Sky Sports, This is the Arsenal we want to see this season
.
The performance highlighted the impact of new signing Christos Tzolis. The 24-year-old Greek international, signed from Club Brugge for €40 million to replace Leandro Trossard, provided the assist for Saka and was noted for his high work rate and pressing. He had nearly scored early in the game, firing a shot just over the bar.
The selection of Kai Havertz as the starting No. 9 over last summer's signing Viktor Gyokeres appeared justified by the scoreline. Havertz has now scored in his last four starts for Arsenal. Gyokeres, who scored 21 times during Arsenal's title-winning campaign, remained an unused substitute against his former club.
Arsenal's fluidity may be attributed to the return of key attackers; Havertz, Odegaard, and Saka started together for only the second time since December 2024. The Gunners also showcased depth in the second half, introducing Martin Zubimendi for Rice and Noni Madueke for Saka in the 68th minute. Ezri Konsa, who joined from Aston Villa for £51 million, was presented to the fans before kickoff.
For Coventry, the match was a stark reminder of the gap between the Championship and the Premier League. Gabriel Magalhaes received a yellow card for a foul on Ellis Simms, but the Coventry attack struggled to create clear chances. Only a speculative acrobatic effort from Lou Tchaouna forced David Raya into a panicked moment.
Arsenal will now wait 10 days for their next fixture. They are scheduled to play Plymouth Argyle away in the Carabao Cup second round on Tuesday, August 25, followed by a Premier League match against Aston Villa at home on Monday, August 31. Coventry will next face fellow promoted side Hull City.
