LeBron James announced Friday, July 24, 2026, that he is joining the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 NBA season. The 41-year-old veteran agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract that includes a player option, according to agent Rich Paul via ESPN.

The move marks the fourth team of James' career and his record-extending 24th season in the league. The decision follows a period of uncertainty after the 2025-26 campaign with the Los Angeles Lakers, where James spent eight seasons. He informed the Lakers on June 30 that he would not be returning to the franchise.

James admitted he strongly considered retirement after the previous season ended. In a statement on X, he wrote:

"I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn't ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game,"

He continued by explaining that he still loves the game and seeks the chance to win another championship, calling this the last decision of his career. He stated that he is not motivated by money or family, but by the desire to sacrifice, work, and compete.

A Star-Studded Roster in Philadelphia

The 76ers beat out several other suitors for James' services, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Stephen Curry had previously made a public pitch to James during a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nev., emphasizing the Warriors' championship organization and the quality of golf in the Bay Area.

Philadelphia now boasts a formidable starting lineup that includes James alongside fellow All-Stars Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown. Brown, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, was acquired from the Celtics in an offseason deal. The roster also features V.J. Edgecombe, an All-Rookie First Team selection.

The addition of James has significantly impacted the team's outlook. After finishing the last season 45-37 and being swept in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the New York Knicks, the 76ers have now become one of the top-4 favorites to win the title, alongside the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the defending champion Knicks.

The signing reunites James with 76ers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey. Both were high school stars in Ohio, and Gansey previously spent 15 seasons with the Cavaliers, including the 2016 championship year.

Signs of the move appeared earlier during Fanatics Fest in New York City. During an interview, James mentioned wanting a team that practiced championship habits while trusting the process more than anything, a phrase he repeated in the same answer.

The announcement itself was unconventional. Topps, a Fanatics-owned trading card company, was among the first to break the news on X, revealing the first trading card of James in a Sixers uniform. The card is available through the print-to-order Topps Now series until July 26.

Despite the hype, the decision was a surprise to the organization. A team source close to the process stated that the 76ers did not learn of James' choice to accept their offer until minutes before his official statement was released.

James joins the league as the all-time leading scorer and a four-time NBA champion. He will turn 42 on Dec. 30. The 76ers official online shop has already listed LeBron No. 23 jerseys, which are scheduled to ship on or before Sept. 11.
