Liverpool sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on loan

Liverpool have reinforced their defense by agreeing to a loan deal for Barcelona star Ronald Araujo. The move comes as the Reds look to stabilize a backline that recently conceded three goals in a defeat against Monaco.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Uruguay international has already signed his contract and passed a medical. The agreement includes a £47million option for Liverpool to make the transfer permanent next summer. Sky Sports reports that Araujo is expected to join Anfield on a season-long loan.

The acquisition follows high-level movement behind the scenes. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was spotted at Anfield talking to Araujo during the match against Monaco, accompanied by a figure identified as Edoardo Crnjar. The arrival of the defender was further hinted at via social media by former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, who sent a message to his international teammate.

Liverpool stated that the deal remains subject to international clearance and a work permit application.

The signing arrives during a frantic final three weeks of the transfer window, with the Premier League season set to begin shortly.

Arsenal have recently unveiled Bruno Guimaraes for £75m and signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge to replace Leandro Trossard. However, the Gunners are facing a defensive crisis of their own, with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba both sidelined by injury. This has led Arsenal to monitor targets such as Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, valued at around £60m, and Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.

Romero's future at Tottenham remains uncertain. While Spurs have not considered selling the Argentina international to Arsenal, they are reportedly in final-stage negotiations with Atletico Madrid. According to the Daily Mail, that deal is worth £34million, though the two clubs are still finalizing the bonus structure and guaranteed fees.

In contrast, Tottenham have secured the long-term future of Micky van de Ven. The defender signed a new contract which is widely reported to run for five years through to 2031.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are prioritizing their own midfield and defensive gaps. Under Michael Carrick, the Red Devils have already spent a combined £85million on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the latter arriving from Aston Villa for £35million. United have also expressed interest in Club Brugge full-back Joaquin Seys, who is valued at £30m, as an alternative to Newcastle's Lewis Hall.
