Manchester United is closing in on a deal to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, with the club triggering the midfielder's £35m release clause. The 29-year-old Belgian international has made it clear that he wants to join United, despite interest from other European clubs.

Tielemans has been a key player for Villa, establishing himself as one of the Premier League's top midfielders with his defensive discipline and technical prowess. His signing would be a significant boost to United's midfield, which has been overhauled this summer with the arrival of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

United's interest in Tielemans intensified after the club abandoned its pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, whose proposed transfer reportedly collapsed due to concerns over a knee injury. The club remains open to signing Ederson, but the deal has become complex, and United may try to restructure the agreement to bring the Brazilian to Old Trafford.

Tielemans' arrival would provide United with a well-rounded and well-balanced player who can slot into life at Old Trafford smoothly. He has a proven track record in the Premier League, having played for Leicester City and Villa, and has also impressed on the international stage with Belgium.

According to Statman Dave, Tielemans ranked in the top 10% of Premier League midfielders last season for tackles, interceptions, fouls won, through balls, progressive passes, and passes into the final third. His passing range, vision, and ability to dictate the tempo of matches would add creativity to United's midfield, which struggled for consistency last season.

Tielemans' versatility would also give United manager Michael Carrick greater tactical flexibility, allowing him to operate as a deep-lying playmaker, a box-to-box midfielder, or in a more advanced creative role.

United's signing of Tielemans would be a smart move, given the club's return to European football and the need to rotate the squad more often. His ability to play as a defensive, central, or attacking midfielder would be a bonus.

The deal is expected to be completed soon, with Tielemans undergoing a medical examination and finalizing the paperwork.

In other transfer news, United is also reportedly interested in signing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, who has been linked with the club for over a year. The club may also revisit its pursuit of Ederson later in the summer, depending on the situation with the Brazilian midfielder.

Mason Greenwood, who left United in 2024, is set to join Fenerbahce, with the Turkish club agreeing a deal in principle with Marseille. United would receive a significant sell-on fee from the transfer, which would be a welcome boost to the club's budget.

Alejandro Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from United last summer, may also be on the move, with the Blues willing to let him go for around £42.5m. United inserted a 10% sell-on clause in the deal, which would earn the club £4.2m if Chelsea gets the desired fee.
