Marcus Rashford exit clause expires as Manchester United sale requires negotiation
Marcus Rashford is returning to Manchester United with his future uncertain after a £40million release clause in his contract expired on July 15. The expiration means any club seeking to sign the 28-year-old forward must now enter direct negotiations with the Old Trafford board, according to reporting from The Athletic.
The fixed-price stipulation was specifically structured to be unavailable to United's primary domestic rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool. While the clause has passed, Rashford has historically dismissed links to those clubs. Speaking in 2018, he stated:
"No. Liverpool was never an option. Liverpool, City, Everton - there was no other club I really would have enjoyed going to other than United. It just felt like the natural thing to do."

The forward has not played for Manchester United since December 2024. His absence follows a fallout with former manager Ruben Amorim, which led to a loan move to Aston Villa in February 2025. Despite scoring three goals in six matches during that period, he eventually moved to Barcelona on loan last summer.
Rashford's time in Spain was productive; he scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in 49 appearances in all competitions, helping Barcelona secure the Spanish crown and the Spanish Super Cup. However, Barcelona opted against triggering a permanent transfer option, which was valued between £26m and €30m. Instead, the Catalan club spent €80m to sign England team-mate Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
Despite the expired clause, Rashford's path to a departure remains complicated. He is currently under contract with United until 2028. Sources told The Athletic that the player has already turned down several proposals, some of which offered wages more lucrative than his current deal. While interest has been noted from Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Napoli, Rashford is understood to prefer a move to a leading club within Europe's top leagues and has no interest in moving to Turkey, which removes Fenerbahce as a likely destination.
Rashford is currently finishing his World Cup commitments with England in North America. The Three Lions reached the semi-finals, where they were defeated 2-1 by Argentina. Rashford appeared in seven matches, starting two, and scored one goal in a 4-2 group-stage win over Croatia.
Regarding his tenure and transfer hopes, Rashford previously stated:
"I live in the moment. I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup. I wanted everything resolved beforehand. Since it wasn't, I'm not thinking about it until after the tournament. I want to be fully present because we're fighting for something very special.”

The forward, who has 138 goals in 426 appearances for his boyhood club since debuting in February 2016, is now expected to report for pre-season training around August 10. New manager Michael Carrick is open to assessing Rashford's physical readiness to determine if he fits into the long-term plans for the upcoming campaign.
Manchester United continues to prefer a permanent sale and has considered Crysencio Summerville as a potential replacement. However, the club's leverage may be tempered by Rashford's high salary expectations and a limited pool of preferred destinations. The decision now rests with Carrick on whether to reintegrate the academy graduate or continue pushing for an exit.
