Rashford's Man Utd exit grows more complicated as 'clause expires
The prospect of Marcus Rashford leaving Manchester United has entered a more complex phase following the expiration of a £40million ($53.1m; €47.1m) exit clause on July 15, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
The fixed provision, which was specifically structured to be unavailable to Manchester City and Liverpool, provided a concrete route for the 28-year-old forward to depart Old Trafford. With that window closed, any interested suitors must now negotiate a transfer fee directly with the Manchester United board.
Rashford remains under contract until 2028, though he has not featured for the club since December 2024. He spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he recorded 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances in all competitions. Despite this productivity, which helped Barcelona secure a second successive LaLiga title and the Spanish Super Cup, the Catalan club opted against triggering a €30m (£26m) option to make the move permanent.
His preferred path back to Spain has since been blocked. Barcelona has instead spent €80m on England team-mate Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and agreed to a €29m (£25m) deal for Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi. Gordon is now expected to fill the role Rashford occupied at Camp Nou.
The forward is currently with England in North America, where the Three Lions reached the semi-finals before losing to Argentina. Rashford scored one goal in five appearances, netting in the 4-2 victory over Croatia. He is scheduled to return to pre-season training in the United States following England's third-place play-off against France.
"I live in the moment. I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup. I wanted everything resolved beforehand. Since it wasn't, I'm not thinking about it until after the tournament. I want to be fully present because we're fighting for something very special.”
Marcus Rashford, via MirrorNegotiations for a departure are complicated by Rashford's financial standing and his own preferences. He is the highest earner in the United squad, reportedly making over $404,600 (£300,000) per week. Sources with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic that Rashford has already turned down several proposals, some of which offered higher wages than his current deal. While some suggest these offers may have originated in Saudi Arabia, Fabrizio Romano has dismissed rumors of a move to Turkey, stating Rashford has zero plans
to join Fenerbahce.
According to Romano, Rashford will only consider leaving Old Trafford for a top club
.
The situation has created a tactical and financial dilemma for new head coach Michael Carrick. While former manager Ruben Amorim had told Rashford to find a new club, Carrick is considered a fan of the academy graduate and intends to work with him. On July 8, Carrick held talks with director of football Jason Wilcox to discuss the forward's future.
However, Rashford's presence on the payroll may impact other recruitment goals. Reporter Laurie Whitwell noted that a potential move for Crysencio Summerville has been coloured by the Rashford situation
, suggesting that Rashford's high wages make it difficult to bring in another player in that position unless a sale is finalized.
Manchester United remains open to a permanent sale and is reportedly adamant they will not entertain further cut-price exits following Rashford's previous loans at Aston Villa and Barcelona. If no suitable bid from a leading club emerges, United is prepared to reintegrate Rashford into the squad.
