Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign 21-year-old midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for a club-record £85 million. The deal, described by multiple sources as a guaranteed fee, marks a decisive victory for Spurs in a high-stakes transfer battle against Manchester United, Arsenal, and Real Madrid.

The Portugal international is expected to undergo a medical shortly. The £85 million fee comfortably surpasses the previous club record of £65 million paid for Dominic Solanke in August 2024. This aggressive approach signals a shift in strategy for the North London club, which previously operated under a more cautious regime led by executive chairman Daniel Levy.

For West Ham, the sale represents the highest amount ever received by a Championship club. The Hammers are entering a rebuild after their relegation from the Premier League in the 2025-26 campaign. The windfall comes as the club seeks to alleviate financial pressures after losing £104.2m last year. Daniel Kretinsky, who is set to become the largest shareholder by purchasing a portion of the Gold family's shares, is expected to inject further capital into the club.

Strategic Midfield Overhaul

The signing is part of a broader squad reconstruction under manager Roberto De Zerbi, who recently helped Tottenham narrowly avoid relegation. Fernandes, who joined West Ham from Southampton for approximately £38 million in August 2025, is viewed as a source of creativity and technical quality. During the 2025-26 season, he made 36 league appearances, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

Fernandes also demonstrated significant creative output, producing 37 chances in the Premier League — a figure exceeded only by Pedro Porro (53) among Spurs players. Beyond his creativity, he is noted for his physicality. Simon Rusk, who worked with Fernandes at Southampton, told Sky Sports:

"That's no surprise that his tackling stats are very high. Both speaking to him and observing him, I could see that would be a feature in his game - and a strength."

Fernandes will join a midfield that includes Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall. However, the midfield is in flux. Bergvall has informed the club of his desire to seek a new challenge, Yves Bissouma will leave upon the expiry of his contract at the end of this month, and Joao Palhinha has returned from his loan spell without a permanent agreement.

Manchester United's Missed Opportunity

Manchester United had identified Fernandes as a priority target for Michael Carrick to rejuvenate a midfield that recently lost Casemiro. Despite dialogue since May, United withdrew after the total package of transfer fee and wages exceeded their valuation. United officials were reportedly wary of an exhausting bidding war and questioned the player's total commitment to their project.

United's failure to secure the midfielder follows other summer complications, including a serious knee injury to Manuel Ugarte during the World Cup. The Red Devils are now shifting their focus to other targets, having already signed Ederson from Atalanta.

Wider Squad and Club Context

Fernandes is the latest of several summer arrivals for Spurs. The club has already secured:

  • Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for £52 million.
  • Marcos Senesi on a free transfer from Bournemouth.
  • Andy Robertson as a free agent.
  • Martin Dubravka.

De Zerbi is also hoping to add Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali to his ranks. This activity follows a period of instability for Spurs, who, aside from winning the Europa League in 2025, have struggled with injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

While Tottenham celebrates, West Ham faces further potential exits. Crysencio Summerville is a target for United and Chelsea, and several clubs — including Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool, United, and Chelsea, are monitoring captain Jarrod Bowen. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jean-Clair Todibo are also likely to depart.

Fernandes, who made his senior international debut in April 2026 but missed the World Cup squad, is expected to link up with his new teammates soon. De Zerbi will reconvene the squad for medical and physical testing starting Friday, July 10, with full training beginning Monday, July 13. The new Premier League season begins August 22 with a trip to Brentford.
