Amazon on Thursday unveiled a new collection of Alexa tablets that fundamentally change how the company approaches the Android ecosystem. For the first time since the 2011 launch of the original Kindle Fire, Amazon tablets will move beyond a forked version of Android limited to the Amazon Appstore, granting users full access to the Google Play Store.
This shift allows users to download millions of applications, including YouTube, Netflix, and more.
An Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch that these devices represent an all-new product line with new hardware and a new OS, rather than a rebranding of existing Fire Tablets. The devices come preloaded with Amazon services including Kindle, Prime Video, Audible, Amazon Music, Amazon Quick, and Amazon Luna.
Hardware Specifications and Model Tiers
The new lineup features three distinct models, all utilizing aluminum unibody designs and high-resolution displays.
Alexa Tablet 12 Pro
The flagship 12 Pro is 6.5 mm thick and features a 12-inch display with 280 PPI, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Amazon claims the device delivers nine times the graphics performance and nearly three times the processing performance of any of its previous tablets. It supports 4K streaming, multi-window multitasking, and graphics-intensive gaming.
The 12 Pro is available in Graphite with two screen options: a standard display and a Nanomatte anti-glare version. To facilitate productivity, Amazon is also introducing a Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard designed to transform the tablet into a workstation.
Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 8
The mid-range Alexa Tablet 11 features an 11-inch 2.5K display (276 PPI) with 90Hz smooth scrolling and a 16:10 aspect ratio. It is available in Graphite, Amethyst, and Matcha. The entry-level Alexa Tablet 8 is an 8.7-inch portable device weighing 329 grams, available in Graphite, Rosette, and Teal.

AI Integration and Software Enhancements
The tablets launch with built-in access to Alexa+, a personalized intelligence assistant. Users can interact via voice or a dedicated Ask Alexa
button to manage smart homes or seek information. A new feature called "On-Screen Intelligence" allows the AI to analyze active screen content.
Reading enthusiasts will find a new Kindle experience that silences notifications and reduces blue light. In this mode, battery life can extend up to 20 hours.
Amazon Kids Tablets and Parental Controls
Amazon is simultaneously introducing kid-friendly versions of the 8.7-inch and 11-inch tablets. These models feature 8-core processors and lightweight aluminum designs. The 11-inch Kids Tablet includes 8GB of RAM for gaming and stylus support, while the 8.7-inch model provides 64GB of storage and up to 14 hours of video playback.
The Kids Tablets are bundled with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, providing ad-free books, games, and videos from partners such as Lego, Disney, and Nickelodeon. This subscription includes "Storybuilder," an AI tool that generates comics and picture books based on character and plot descriptions provided by children.
Parental oversight is managed through a pre-installed Parent Dashboard, which is also accessible via iOS and Android apps. Parents can set learning goals, monitor usage, and establish screen-time limits. The dashboard allows parents to approve every individual download from the Google Play Store.

Depending on the child's age, these devices come with different protective cases featuring characters from SpongeBob, Barbie, and Paw Patrol. Children aged 3+ (pre-K) receive a soft bumper case, while children aged 6+ receive a slim hard case with a built-in kickstand.
