DuckDuckGo has announced a new capability for its browser to block most video ads, with a specific focus on those found on YouTube. The feature targets interruptions that occur both before a video begins and during playback.

The ad-blocking system relies on open-source community filter lists from uBlock Origin, which are regularly updated to adapt to changes in how ads are served. DuckDuckGo also applies its own rules to reduce breakage and improve compatibility. The company cautioned that these mechanisms may lead to longer buffering times, though videos should play without interruption once loaded.

YouTube ad blocking is enabled by default for users on Mac, Windows, and iPhone, provided the application is up to date. Android users can currently activate the feature manually through Settings > Ad Blocking, though DuckDuckGo stated it will be automatically enabled for Android soon.

To use the blocker, viewers must watch videos directly within the DuckDuckGo browser. The feature does not function within the YouTube app, and the company noted that mobile devices often open YouTube links in the native app by default.

This new tool is distinct from the Duck Player, a built-in video player that offers a theater mode and enforces YouTube's strictest privacy settings for embedded video. While Duck Player prevents tracking cookies and personalized ads—meaning viewing habits there do not influence YouTube recommendations—it does not save a user's place in playlists. In contrast, the YouTube Ad Blocking feature maintains the standard YouTube experience, allowing users to save their spot in playlists and maintain viewing histories.

DuckDuckGo confirmed that users can enable both YouTube Ad Blocking and Duck Player simultaneously.

Users can manage these settings at any time via the browser menu. On mobile, the option is found under Settings > Ad Blocking, or by tapping the ☰ menu to disable the blocker while watching a video. Desktop users can toggle the feature by clicking the video icon located next to the green shield in the address bar.

If a user disables ad blocking in the middle of a video, the browser provides an optional, anonymous prompt to send an error report to help the company improve the product. DuckDuckGo is encouraging users to test the new feature and submit anonymous feedback via the ☰ menu.

The update positions DuckDuckGo alongside other browsers like Opera and Brave, which offer built-in ad and tracker blocking without third-party extensions. This move comes as some users seek alternatives to Google Search to avoid forced AI tools.

Beyond YouTube, the DuckDuckGo browser continues to block tracker-powered web ads, manage cookie pop-ups, and maintain Global Privacy Control by default to prevent the sale or sharing of personal information.

Because YouTube frequently alters its ad-serving methods, DuckDuckGo acknowledged that the blocker may experience temporary "hiccups" or stability issues until filter rules are updated.
