NYT Strands June 27 puzzle features apartment-themed words
The New York Times released its Strands puzzle for Saturday, June 27, 2026, designated as Puzzle #846. The session centers on urban residential living, utilizing the theme phrase Suite re-lease
.
Strands is a word-search variation currently in beta, accessible via the official website and the NYT Games app. Unlike traditional word searches, words in Strands can change direction—moving up, down, left, right, or diagonally—to form quirky shapes and patterns. Every letter in the 6x8 grid must be used exactly once to complete the puzzle.
The puzzle for June 27 involves seven total words: six regular theme words and one spangram. The spangram, which describes the overall theme and stretches across the board from one side to the other, is APARTMENTS. This word appears in yellow once found, while the other theme words are highlighted in light blue.
The six theme words associated with residential rentals are:
- LOFT: An open-concept space often converted from industrial or warehouse buildings with high ceilings.
- STUDIO: A unit combining the bedroom, kitchen, and living room into one area.
- FLAT: A self-contained unit, a term commonly used in British real estate.
- PENTHOUSE: A premium top-floor unit frequently featuring a private roof terrace.
- CONDO: A space purchased by the occupant rather than rented.
- EFFICIENCY: A small "micro-apartment" designed for maximum space utilization.
Of these, EFFICIENCY is noted as the trickiest word due to its length of 10 letters and the possibility that players might initially associate the term with productivity rather than housing.
The game is designed to be more time-consuming than other New York Times offerings like Wordle and Connections, with some estimates suggesting it takes 10 or more minutes to solve. To assist players, Strands includes a hint system. Players can submit any non-theme word of four letters or more; for every three such words found, the game reveals the letters of one theme word. If a player uses another hint before solving the first, the specific letter order of that word is revealed.
Unlike some of its counterparts, Strands has no time limit and no failure state. Players cannot run out of guesses. When a word is submitted that is too short or invalid, the text simply shakes.
Upon completion, the game provides a shareable performance card. This card uses blue dots to represent found theme words, a yellow dot for the spangram, and a lightbulb icon to indicate words discovered via hints.
