Skullcandy integrates Bose technology into new Crusher 1080 ANC headphones

Skullcandy has launched the Crusher 1080 ANC, a new flagship wireless headphone designed to bridge the gap between the brand's signature heavy bass and high-end audio engineering. The headphones retail for $279.99 and come in black, candy, primer, and cement color options.

The release is part of a broader effort by the Park City, Utah-based company to move beyond its reputation as a lifestyle brand and improve its engineering credentials. Brian Garofalow, CEO of Skullcandy, told Wired that while the company has been successful at community building and pushing cultures forward, it has not been the greatest at the engineering part of innovation. Garofalow stated that the vision is to return to being a unique brand while improving every part of the business that impacts that identity.

Bose Engineering Partnership

The Crusher 1080 ANC is the first non-Bose product to feature several specific technologies from the audio giant. These include the WaveForm audio engine, designed to keep audio balanced and smooth, and TrueSpatial audio with head tracking, which creates a dimensional soundstage whether the user is stationary or running.

Noise cancellation is handled by Bose’s QuietControl ANC, which utilizes a six-microphone array. This system is adaptive, automatically adjusting to environmental noise levels, and allows users to more granularly adjust the level of cancellation compared to standard headphones. Additionally, the headphones include Bose’s SpeechClarity to reduce noise during voice calls.

Skullcandy's partnership with Bose began in 2025 with the release of the Method 360 ANC earbuds. While those earbuds featured general Bose tuning, the Crusher 1080 ANC represents a deeper integration. According to Garofalow, the company worked with Bose engineers to decouple the proprietary Crusher bass-boosting technology from the rest of the acoustic tuning profile. This separation is intended to ensure that the mids and highs remain sharp even when the bass is heavily increased, avoiding the muddiness found in previous models.

Hardware and Haptic Bass

The Crusher line is known for using both full-range and dedicated bass drivers in each ear cup. To further reduce distortion at high volumes, the 1080 ANC features redesigned drivers with a stiffer "live edge" diaphragm material. Skullcandy claims this results in more controlled pistonic movement and less harmonic breakup.

The signature haptic bass remains a central feature, controlled by a prominent physical dial on the exterior of the headphone. This allows users to adjust the intensity of the vibrations. The headphones also include a switch to toggle between ANC and transparency mode, as well as to cycle through listening presets for music, podcasts, movies, and custom settings.

Other hardware specifications include:

  • Battery Life: Up to 60 hours with ANC off and 50 hours with ANC on.
  • Fast Charging: A 10-minute charge provides up to four hours of playback.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio, Auracast, and low latency audio, alongside 3.5mm and USB-C wired connections.
  • Features: Multipoint pairing, wear detection that pauses music, and a flat-folding design.

Market Positioning

At approximately $280, Skullcandy is positioning the Crusher 1080 ANC as a more affordable alternative to premium models from Sony, Apple, and Bose's own QuietComfort line. However, the pricing places them in a competitive bracket with mid-range options from brands like Sennheiser and Anker.

The company is leveraging this tech-forward approach to regain market share lost during the rise of true wireless earbuds. Garofalow indicated that future products will continue this trend of incorporating "future-facing technology," though he declined to provide specific details on upcoming releases.

The Crusher 1080 ANC is available for purchase immediately and includes a lined rolltop bag for storage and transport.
