Sony has announced a significant shift in its business strategy, confirming that it will cease the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. This policy, which encompasses releases from both Sony and third-party publishers, marks a formal end to the era of physical media for new software on PlayStation platforms.

The company framed the decision as a reaction to long-term market trends. According to a statement from Sony, the general preference for digital media has significantly outpaced the demand for physical discs, and the transition is intended to align with how the community currently accesses games. Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, described the move as a natural progression that allows the company to prioritize resources toward digital innovation.

Industry data supports this shift. Recent figures indicate that digital purchases now account for nearly four in five sales of full games on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The announcement follows recent controversy surrounding the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. While physical versions of games released before January 2028 will remain unaffected by the new policy, the announcement has triggered industry-wide speculation regarding the future of console hardware. Analysts, including Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis, view the move as a watershed moment for the sector.

The move away from discs introduces questions regarding game preservation and ownership. Sony maintains that it remains committed to delivering classic experiences through emulation and remasters.

Simultaneously, Sony is moving to shutter digital marketplaces for older hardware. The PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles is set to close in most regions in July 2027, with earlier closures scheduled for specific markets, including Latin American regions and the Middle East in 2026. Sony stated that these legacy stores are no longer able to support modern commerce systems. While previously purchased digital content for these systems is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, the shutdown will end the ability to make new purchases on these platforms.

As the industry moves toward 2028, several unknowns remain. It is unclear how physical retail stores will package and sell titles in a post-disc environment, whether through redemption cards or other methods.
