Across southern Europe, historic wildfires in France and Spain are generating a rare and volatile meteorological phenomenon known as pyrocumulonimbus, or pyroCb
. These towering fire clouds
are creating dangerous feedback loops where the blazes produce their own weather, which in turn triggers new fires through lightning and extreme winds.
According to the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, a fire cloud forms when extreme heat pushes smoke and hot air rapidly upward. As the plume expands and cools in areas of lower atmospheric pressure, water vapor condenses into a pyrocumulus cloud. This process releases heat, increasing the cloud's buoyancy and allowing it to develop into a massive thunderstorm.
The most dangerous aspect of these storms is the accumulation of electrical charges among ice particles in the coldest regions of the cloud. This results in lightning that can ignite new blazes far from the original perimeter. The World Climate Research Programme warns that the towering updrafts also pull surrounding air toward the fire, creating strong winds from multiple directions that feed the flames with oxygen and suddenly redirect them.
Beyond lightning, a study in Communications Earth & Environment notes that fire clouds have produced hail, violent downdrafts, and tornado-like vortices. These storms can also lift burning branches and embers high into the atmosphere, carrying them beyond existing fire lines. On the ground, the resulting dense smoke and near-total darkness can leave residents and emergency crews disoriented.
The Toll in France and Spain
In France, the Gironde region has become the center of the worst wildfires in modern French history. Flames have shot 30 metres into the air, and more than 36,000 people have been forced to flee their homes across France and Spain. In the beach town of Lacanau, a further 4,000 people were evacuated on Tuesday.
President Emmanuel Macron, meeting with emergency services in Bordeaux, stated the situation is more difficult than at any time since the Second World War

The fight against the flames has relied heavily on a massive deployment of over 2,500 firefighters, roughly 80 per cent of whom are volunteers. Many of these responders are local vintners and bakers. The human cost has been severe; four firefighters have died since the fires broke out in the Gironde and Landes regions last week. Among them were corporals Anthony Berthome and Wilfried Schmitter, both 34, who were killed when their engine was engulfed in flames near Bordeaux-Mérignac airport. Cpl Laurent Manson, 38, was killed Monday in a water tanker accident.
To slow the spread, crews extended a 16-mile firebreak from 160ft to 230ft. Local farmers assisted by using agricultural equipment to uproot trees.
Economic and Environmental Impact
The fires threaten the prestigious Bordeaux wine region. While direct flames are a risk, vintners fear smoke taint
—where airborne volatile chemicals from smoke are absorbed by grapes and bond to sugars, creating medicinal or burnt flavors. This is particularly critical as the 2026 harvest ripened early due to oppressive heat and a lack of rain.
Gabriel Barre, a winemaker at Château la Grave, told the NYT:
"There has been a radical change in the winemaking world. This year, it feels like we're on another planet. When we talk about it on the phone with our friends, we don't want our kids to hear because it scares them."

The industry was already struggling; Bordeaux production dipped under 3 million hectoliters in 2025 for the first time in modern history, and sales volumes fell another 3 per cent in 2025.
Wider Regional Risks
The risk is not limited to the south. In the UK, the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) reported 706 wildfires across England and Wales so far this year, with 208 of those occurring between July 16 and 28. While UK fires are typically smaller than those in southern Europe, Phil Garrigan, chairman of the NFCC, warned that a changing climate makes larger and more complex incidents more likely.
The UK has seen significant activity, including a major wildfire at Tintwistle Moor in Derbyshire and a two-week blaze in Scotland's Cairngorms national park. Provisional Met Office data shows this month has been 3C above average, potentially making July 2026 one of the hottest three or four Julys on record.
Scientists are now racing to better understand pyroCb events, a field of research that only gained prominence after Australia's 2019–2020 Black Summer. Researchers from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are seeking better satellite measurements to identify when a smoke plume is about to transition into a fire cloud, which could provide emergency crews with critical warnings before winds shift or lightning begins.
The danger remains imminent, as fire chiefs in France fear another heatwave could send temperatures soaring to 40C, while temperatures in France were expected to reach 106 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday.
