National Mall evacuated due to storms ahead of Trump's July 4 speech

Severe storms gathering near Washington forced event organizers to order an immediate evacuation of the National Mall on Saturday, July 4, 2026, complicating President Donald Trump's plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. The order, delivered via loudspeakers, came just as the Salute to America celebration was beginning.

The disruption occurred around 7 p.m. ET, as the National Weather Service had placed the capital under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. ET, with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. On July 5.

During the evacuation, some attendees walked toward exits while others remained in place. National Guard troops were also deployed to tell people to leave.

Freedom 250, the nonprofit overseeing the anniversary celebrations, coordinated with the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and FEMA to direct crowds toward nearby shelter. Available locations included:

Washington’s metro system also announced that several underground stations were available for shelter. As crowds filled the underground food court of the Ronald Reagan Building, some revelers waited for updates while eating from available vendors.

The U.S. Secret Service temporarily suspended checkpoint operations. This left it unclear how attendees would be cleared to re-enter the space for the president's speech, which was scheduled for approximately 10 p.m. ET.

A record-setting heat wave had already forced the cancellation of the National Independence Day Parade.

Beyond Washington, the 250th anniversary was marked by a mix of celebration and regional weather disruptions. In Boston, thousands attending the Boston Pops July 4th Fireworks Spectacular were briefly ushered into a tunnel on Storrow Drive due to a thunderstorm before being allowed back onto the Esplanade. In New York, a severe thunderstorm watch remained in effect until 11 p.m. Local time. However, New York still hosted a massive maritime and aerial gathering featuring 43 tall ships, a stealth bomber, and the Navy's Blue Angels.

The milestone holiday unfolded against a backdrop of deep political division. At Mount Rushmore on Friday, Trump described communism as a mortal threat to American liberty and claimed it was more dangerous than 9/11 or either World War. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke Friday of ideals strong enough to endure any authoritarian regime.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking aboard the USS Kearsarge in New York Harbor on Saturday, claimed small but loud voices would speak obsessively about the country's imperfections rather than its greatness.

Other national highlights included 150 new citizens taking the oath of allegiance at George Washington's Mount Vernon. In Philadelphia, the One Philly Unity Concert featured appearances by Meek Mill, Christina Aguilera, and The Roots.
